Case Analysis

 

Zeng Fan and Bill became good friends during their two-year graduate study in the same program. In the summer they graduated. Bill went to a holiday resort in Alaska. When he came back from the trip, Zeng Fan had moved to Chicago. Bill called her in Chicago, and said he had bought something for her while in Alaskaand would put it in the mail.

 

Several days later, Zeng Fan got a letter from Bill. She opened it; a round item fell to the dinner table. She picked it up; it was a small brooch made of some kind of bone with an Eskimo design carved on it. The brooch has a small tag describing the sign as a symbol of love. On the back of the tag was the price. Bill had forgotten remove it. The price was $2.99.

 

"What is it?" asked Chen Hua, Zeng Fan 's roommate who came from China a month ago. They were having dinner together.

 

"It's a gift from a friend."

 

Looking at the price, Chen Hua said, "He calls this a gift?" She shook her head in disbelief.

 

Answer the following questions:

(1) What did Chen Hua mean when she said "He calls this a gift?"?

(2) Why did Bill send Zeng Fan the brooch?

(3) What problems may result from this gift from Bill?
