Why Greeks-A preface by Professor Phiroze Vasunia

To study the ancient Greeks is to understand a culture as thoughtful, sophisticated, and ingenious as any. This is a culture that grappled with fundamental questions about religion and science, medicine and philosophy, democracy and politics, sex and the body, marriage and the family. Anyone looking for a historically informed analysis of these concerns should turn with full seriousness to the Greek writings. Thinkers as divergent as Gandhi and Leo Strauss, Freud and Marx turned to the Greeks in their own work. The art and literature of Greece are difficult, thought-provoking, and in many respects also quite alien, but their very complexity and strangeness are also what make them fascinating. The Greek texts give us a chance of understanding who we are and the opportunity to reflect, with nuance and rigour, about the most pressing issues of our time.
