1.5 Zeus and Olympia

draw lot: ph. 抽签

monarchy: n. the system in which a country is ruled by a king or queen 君主政体

supreme: adj. highest in rank, power, authority, etc.; dominant 最高的,最重要的

equivalent: adj. equal in quantity, value, force, meaning, etc. 相等的,等量的

omnipotent (all powerful): adj. all-powerful 全能的;有无限权力的

omniscient (all-knowing): adj. knowing everything 无所不知的

be subject to: 受支配,从属于;常遭受;有倾向的

amorous: adj. showing or concerning sexual love 多情的;情爱的

superb: adj. extremely good, excellent  极好的;华丽的;宏伟的

renowned: adj. known and admired by a lot of people 著名的;有声望的

overweening: adj. too proud and confident – used to show disapproval 自负的

obscure: adj. 昏暗的,朦胧的;晦涩的;不著名的,无名的

crooked: adj. bent, twisted, or not in a straight line 弯曲的,歪的;不正当的

haughty: adj. behaving in a proud unfriendly way 傲慢的,自大的

multifaceted: adj. having many parts or sides 多层面的,包罗万象的

infinitely: adv. very much – used especially when comparing things 无限地,极其

sacred: adj. relating to a god or religion 神圣的,宗教的,庄严的

sanctuary: n. a holy place避难所,至圣所

Panhellenic (“all-Greek”): adj. 泛希腊人的,泛希腊主义的

versatile: adj.多才多艺的;通用的,万能的

epithets: n. a name or title used to characterize some person or thing  绰号,浑名

illustrious: adj. famous and admired  著名的,杰出的;辉煌的

adultery: n. 通奸

eminence: n. high status importance owing to marked superiority 显赫,名望

serene: adj. very calm or peaceful 平静的;清澈的;晴朗的

rend: v. tear or be torn violently 撕碎,分裂

surge: v. to suddenly move very quickly in a particular direction 汹涌,蜂拥而来

allot: v. to distribute by lot or in arbitrary shares; apportion 分配,拨给

anthropomorphism: n.  神人同形同性论

exceed: v. to be more than a particular number or amount 超过,胜过
