Homeric question: ph.荷马问题

conventional: adj. established by accepted usage or general agreement 传统的

arbitrary: adj. decided or arranged without any reason or plan 任意的

stabilize: v. to make or become stable or more stable 稳定,安定

Semitic: adj.闪米特语族的,闪米特人的,犹太人的

exert a powerful hold on: ph. 产生巨大影响

rhapsode: n. in ancient Greece, a person who recited rhapsodies 马史诗吟诵者

transition: n. change or passage from one state or stage to another 过渡,转变

crucial: adj. very important 重要的

enormous: adj. unusually large in size, extent, or degree; immense庞大的,巨大的

as opposed to: ph.与…截然相反,对照

ingrained: adj. deeply impressed or instilled 根深蒂固的

be embedded in: ph. 内嵌在,铭刻在

fizzing: adj. hissing and bubbling 嘶嘶声的

javelin: n. a spear thrown as a weapon or in competitive field events 标枪,投枪

intensity: n. the quality of being felt very strongly or having a strong effect 强度

deceased: adj. someone who is no longer alive 已故的

streamline: v. to make streamlined 使简单化

ruthlessly: adv. in a ruthless manner; heartlessly 无情地,冷酷地

efficiently: adv. in an efficient manner; effectively, usefully 有效地,效率高地
