well-crafted: adj. 精心设计的

Laius: n. a king of Thebes 拉伊俄斯(希腊神话中的底比斯国王)

Jocasta: n. a queen of Thebes 伊俄卡斯特

jeer at: ph. 嘲笑,讥诮

dreadful: adj. extremely unpleasant 可怕的,糟透的

adoptive parent: ph. 收养人,养父母

Sphinx: n. 斯芬克斯

infamous: adj. having an exceedingly bad reputation 声名狼藉的

regent ruler: ph. 摄政者

widowed: adj. single because of death of the spouse 丧偶的

cane: n. thin pieces of the stems of plants, used for making furniture and baskets 手杖

outraged: adj. angered at something unjust or wrong 义愤填膺的,气愤的

plague: n. a disease that causes death 瘟疫

disturbing: adj. worrying or upsetting 令人不安的

blight: n. a state or condition being blighted 枯萎,荒芜

pestilence: n. a disease that spreads quickly and kills a lot of people 瘟疫(尤指鼠疫)

invoke: v. to summon into action or bring into existence, often as if by magic 祈求

wear out: ph. 磨损,耗尽

complicity: n. guilt as an accomplice in a crime or offense 共谋,串通

outmatch: v. to surpass or perform better than 胜过

contrivance: n. 计谋

juggling: n. throwing and catching several objects simultaneously 杂耍

quack: n. an untrained person who pretends to be a physician 庸医,江湖骗子
