4.4-Socrates’ Apology

legal proceeding: ph. 诉讼,法律程序

rhetorician: n. a person who delivers a speech or oration雄辩家;修辞家

pose questions: ph. 提出问题

perspective: n. a way of regarding situations or topics etc. 角度,观点

randomly select: ph. 随机选取,随机挑选

condemn sb. to death: ph. 判某人死罪

prosecutor: n. a government official who conducts criminal prosecutions on behalf of the state 检察官,公诉人

utter: v. articulate; either verbally or with a cry, shout, or noise 说出

sue: v. institute legal proceedings against; file a suit against 控告

give heed to: ph. 留心,注意

dispassionately: adv. in an impartially dispassionate manner 冷静地,不动感情地

be fuelled by: ph. 助长

identified …with: ph. 认为等同于,与一致

evil-doer: n. a person who sins (without repenting) 作恶者,坏人

aforesaid: adj. being the one previously mentioned or spoken of 前述的,上述的

circulate: v. become widely known and passed on 流传

speculation: n. a hypothesis that has been formed by speculating or conjecturing推测

provoke: v. to call forth (emotions, feelings, and responses) 引起,煽动

affirm: v. to establish or strengthen as with new evidence or facts 肯定

atheist: n. someone who denies the existence of god 无神论者

reckless: adj. marked by defiant disregard for danger or consequences 鲁莽的

acquittal: n. a judgment of not guilty 赦免,无罪

preach: v. to speak, plead, or argue in favor of 鼓吹,宣扬

assume: v. 认为,设想

agora: n. a place of assembly for the people in ancient Greece 市场
