Discussion Questions of Lesson 5

(Choose One to Answer)

1. Bullet screen comments in Bilibili or other video platforms can be very impressive. Some people turn off bullet screen comments when they watch videos. Others love reading these comments and even send some online. Do you usually turn them on or off? Why? Some researchers believe that “bullet screen comments give users virtual media experience and enjoyment by constantly creating ways of communication, exchange of views and obtaining power, and the ‘freedom’ of having this experience and enjoyment comes at the cost of paying more time and energy than traditional media consumption.” (Lv Peng, Xu Fanjia, 2016:28) Do you agree with this view? Are you tired of watching and sending the bullet screen comments? Can the act of sending bullet screen comments empower users?

2. Behind the developing idols are the large number of fans’ support and devotion. They vote for their idols, show their support, work hard to move up their idols’ rankings, increase social media traffic, setup websites of fan-support, and create user-generated content (UGC) as fans. The passion, devotion and ability of fans are amazing but also led to controversies. Is this kind of consumption behavior of popular culture an embodiment of fans’ power or exploitation of fans’ labor?

3. Do celebrities based on social media traffic truly have what it takes to deserve that fame? Please elaborate with examples.
