Question: What do you think of China Construction’s project in Egypt? How will The Belt and Road Initiative change your life?
For millennia, the River Nile nurtured the development of Egypt's ancient civilizations. Today, Egypt faces two major obstacles to its modernization: 90% of the country is desert, and the population is growing rapidly. The government has now proposed a national rejuvenation plan, which perfectly fits within the“ Belt and Road” initiative.
In 2015, the government decided to build a new administrative capital with a total area of more than 700 square kilometers. Once completed, it’s expected to be home to 5 million people. It is located in the desert zone 45 km east of Cairo, between the capital and the city of Suez, which borders the Red Sea.
Given that Egypt is the pivotal country for the "Belt and Road" initiative, the construction of the "New Capital" has received great support from China. On October 11th, 2017, China Construction Group signed as the general contractor of the “New Capital CBD” project in Egypt.
The project will showcase China's strong construction capability by creating a stunning skyline of “Chinese buildings” in the new economic center. It includes 20 high-rise buildings and the supporting infrastructure, the most eye-catching of which will be a 385m high skyscraper. Once complete, it will become the tallest tower in Africa.
The “New Capital CBD” project has also created a large number of jobs for local people. At present, the number of Egyptian employees is twice that of the Chinese on the construction site. In some cases, there will be more than 10,000 local employees working on the site, accounting for 80-90% of the total. In working for a Chinese company, local employees not only receive more lucrative wage, but also learn skills from experienced Chinese engineers. It will help to cultivate a group of brilliant local engineers once the project is finished. Living under the same roof, Egyptian and Chinese employees have become good friends. Thanks to the Egyptian's optimistic attitude, the staff are working together happily and efficiently.
When Egypt’s “New Capital CBD” project is finished in three years' time, it will not just promote local economic development, but also create a signature for Chinese construction in Egypt. At 385 meters high, the tallest building in Africa will be a beacon for China's construction capability.
