1. 公元410年后(约是中国的南北朝时代),罗马占领时期结束,史称“罗马人的征服” Roman Conquest)。随后,来自德国北部平原的三个日耳曼部落盎格鲁人(Angles)、撒克逊人(Saxons)和朱特人(Jutes)开始来到不列颠定居。英语(the English language)就是盎格鲁-撒克逊人的语言。这个阶段被称为古英语阶段,又称盎格鲁-撒克逊时期 the Anglo-Saxon Period。
公元1066(约在中国宋朝)年,诺曼人在征服王威廉(William the Conqueror)率领下,横渡英吉利海峡,在哈斯丁战役中击溃了盎格鲁·撒克逊军队,英王哈罗德战死,英国被征服,史上称为诺曼征服(the Norman Conquest)。从此,英国结束了分裂状态,置于中央集权的封建制度统治之下。诺曼征服是英国历史上的重要转折点,对英语的发展有巨大影响。
诺曼人征服之后,诺曼人占据了教会和政府的一切重要职务。以后的二、三百年间,诺曼法语(Norman French)成为英国官方语言。这段时期的奇特现象是,普通人仍然操英语,而教会和官方语言是法语和拉丁语。这段时间被称作中古英语阶段,在这个时期大量的法语单词涌入英语,并为日后大量的借词 --- 主要是希腊语词、拉丁语词 --- 进入英语铺平了道路。
2.英语词汇的特点
随着前面讲的英语经历过三次征服之后,各个征服者便在英语中留下了印记,而英语借用了大量外来元素,从简单的单音节词汇发展成前缀+词根+后缀的模式。词根、前缀、后缀又被称为“扩大英语词汇的三把钥匙”
英语中的词根绝大多数源自拉丁语、法语或希腊语。所以我们在学习英语的过程中,就要充分利用英语的这个特点,用类似于汉语的说文解字的方法来记忆英语单词。
词根:norm; oli-,ali-; ori-; rupt-; unda-;
前缀: ab-: away, e-: out, co- = con-: with, dis-: not, away, re-: again, back
abnormal a.不正常的,反常的;变态的
分析 > (ab-: away + norm:标准 +- al ) e-:out > ex-:
记忆口诀: 离开了正常
