2.1 Why Homer matters?

authenticity: n. the quality of being real or true 真实性，确实性

bard: n. any poet, esp. one who writes lyric or heroic verse吟游诗人

Grecian: adj.古希腊式的，（与）古希腊（有关）的

hexameter: n. a line of poetry with six main beats 六步格的诗，六步格

metrical: adj. of or composed in meter or verse 韵律的，有韵律的

restrain: v. to stop someone from doing something 抑制，约束

chant: v. to singor say a religious song or prayer in a way 歌唱

Rhapsode: n.荷马史诗吟诵者

Cicero: n.a Roman politician who was known as an orator 西塞罗

Pisistratus: n. tyrant of Athens 庇西斯特拉图（雅典僭主）

scattered: adj. spread or dispersed in an untidy or irregular way分散的，散乱的

Great Panathenaea: ph.伟大的泛雅典娜节

Byzantium: n. an ancient city, center of the Byzantine Empire 拜占庭

superficial:adj. 表面的，肤浅的

siege: n. 围攻，包围

shipwreck: n. the destruction of a ship in an accident 海难，遇难船

oversimplified: adj. 过于简单化的

epithet: n. a word or short phrase used to describe someone 绰号，浑名

flare: n. a sudden bright flame闪光，闪耀

reverence: n. great respect and admiration for someone or something 崇敬

touchstone: n. something used as a test or standard 试金石，检验标准

unsurpassed: adj. better or greater than anyone or anything else 无法超越的

confront: v. to be face to face with; be in front of面对，遭遇

prominent: adj. widely known; eminent 杰出的，卓越的

venerate: adj. held in deep respect; revered 敬仰的
