(video-4)

Now let’s summarize some core rules from the video.

1. Be ethical

2. Don’t plagiarize

3. Respect other people’s time and bandwidth

4. Make yourself look good online

5. Respect other people’s privacy

6. Don’t abuse your power

7. Be forgiving of other people’s mistakes

8. Think twice before reacting

In the third part of the lecture, we’ll have a brief comparison of the etiquette differences between China and the typical western countries. In this part, you’ll be divided into two groups. One group will discuss Chinese etiquettes, and another group western etiquettes. Here is the list of topics for your discussion:

1. Greeting

2. Complimenting

3. Taboo topics

Etiquette is a cultural way of behaving which implies acting under certain manners. As it is a cultural construction, it depends on every culture and the same behavior can be considered polite in one culture and rude in another. After your group discussion, let’s find out the major differences between Chinese and western etiquette in the above mentioned three aspects:

1. Greeting:

While Westerns usually talk about the weather, Chinese ask if you have already eaten, and, of course, it is not an invitation! In China it is also common to ask where you are going, while for Westerners it could be an interference into their personal affairs.

2. Complimenting: honesty vs. modesty

The Chinese are polite rather than honest while the westerners tend to be frank and direct.

In China, people don't tend to praise their family in front of others while in Western countries it is often done. Another difference is about what can be complimented: in China it is not acceptable that males compliment females.

3. taboo topics

Death and human's excreta are both taboo topics in both cultures. In general, Westerners have more taboos than Chinese people. They place a higher value on privacy, so topics such as marital status, age or income are considered taboo.

Of course, etiquette differences can be seen in all specific parts of daily life, which could be discussed further the whole day! But due to the time limit, we have to stop for now, and here is an assignment for you: Please continue to find some other differences between the two cultures and make a comparison list of respective etiquette features.

Last but not least for this part, you are going to watch a video clip on etiquette in China. After this, you need to discuss some questions in groups.
