Part I Long conversations:
Directions: In this part, you will hear two long conversations. After each conversation, there will be some questions. Both the conversation and the questions will be read only once. Listen carefully and choose the best answer to each question.
Conversation 1
M: Hi, Mary. Do you like music?
W: Yes, very much, especially classical music.
M: Do you like rock music, Mary?
W: No, I think it’s too noisy. Do you like rock music?
M: Yes, I do. You know rock stars play exciting music and they always wear unusual clothes. I often go to their concerts.
W: Oh, do you? I don’t understand why rock stars are so famous?
M: Oh, it’s because of their fans that rock stars are famous and earn a lot of money. You know their fans go to their concerts, buy their records and wear the same kind of clothes.
W: I see. Did you watch TV last night?
M: No, I didn’t. I went to a concert last night and got back home very late. What was on?
W: Zed Hawks was interviewed on TV last night.
M: Really, he is one of my favorite stars. He is world famous and he is also very rich. At least I suppose so. He has given concerts in twelve countries and sold over twenty million records.
W: Yes, you are right. He owns three magnificent houses, five cars and a private plane too.
M: What did he say on the TV interview?
W: He didn’t say anything. During the TV interview, he was suggested to behave better because his fans imitate him.
M: Yes, go on.
W: He reacted very angrily, and walked out. The interview lasted less than two minutes.
M: I was disappointed when I heard this. He really behaved badly. You know like politicians and film stars, rock stars need the public. They earn their money from the public. So why shouldn’t the public criticize them? I’m not saying that famous people should always behave well. What I am saying is that they shouldn’t complain when they are criticized. If they do, they will lose their fans.

M: Well, Adrienne, I was looking at your photos, and you can play the violin.
W: That's true!
M: And you can sing very well.
W: Ah, I can sing some.
M: OK, so, tell us about playing the violin.
W: I really enjoy playing the violin. I've been playing for many, many years since I was a little girl and everyone in my family plays an instrument so it's part of what we do together as a family.
M: So when you were little you practiced every day?
W: I did. My mom made me. I didn't have a choice. It's good for discipline though, or at least that's what she told me.
M: So, how would you practice? Did you have a tutor come over to your house?
W: No, I had a violin teacher once a week and when I was really small I went to group lessons also, so it was once a week with a private and once a week with a group.
M: Wow! That's a lot. What did you think about the violin when you were little?
W: I don't remember thinking about it. I don't even remember learning how to play. I was only two. I was still in diapers, but my mom said that when I had my first recital, she said I absolutely could not play on stage in a diaper so that's basically how she got me out of my diapers. So she says!
M: When did you stop playing?
W: I haven't stopped.
M: Oh, you still practice.
W: I still play although I don't have my violin here in Japan, right now. I'm kind of on a break I guess. I just don't like to carry it around overseas.
M: Is it hard to be away from your violin?
W: It is sometimes. I miss it. I miss playing with my family too.
M: So are you going to play the violin for me sometime?
W: Sure! If you can find a violin I will.

Directions: In this part, you are going to hear three short passages. After each passage, there will be some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be read only once. Listen carefully and choose the best answer to each question you’ve heard.
Passage 1
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the most human and lovable of the great composers. The period in which he lived was one of romantic interest, and his early life as a musical child genius before the principal courts of Europe reads like a fairy tale.
At no time in the history of the world has the court life of Europe been so wasteful as during the later half of the eighteenth century. One of the great child geniuses the world has ever known, the boy Mozart, and his sister Matia Anna, soon became the court favorites and traveled not only in Austria, but to France and Italy as well. It was but natural that the youthful genius should be influenced by these experiences. There is a delicacy and refinement in Mozart’s musical expression which is not found in the works of his master, Haydn.
From his seventh year until his death at the age of thirty-five, Mozart’s genius poured forth a free stream of over a thousand melodious compositions, many of which were never published. Mozart wrote all forms for all instruments. Of his forty-nine symphonies, the two greatest are G-minor and C-major. These works were both written in six weeks during the summer of 1788.
Questions:
8. Which of the following countries had not been visited by Mozart and his sister?
A. Austria
B. France
C. Australia
D. Italy
9. How many symphonies did Mozart create?
A. 35
B. 1000
C. 49
D. 6
10. Which word could be used to describe the period in which Mozart lived?
A. Conservative
B. Romantic
C. Peaceful
D. Realistic
Passage 2
One of America’s most important exports is her modern music. American music is played all over the world. It is enjoyed by the people of all ages in all countries. Although the lyrics are English, people not speaking English enjoy it. The reasons for its popularity are its fast pace and rhythmic beat.
The music has many origins in the United States. Country music, coming from the rural areas in the southern United States, is one source. Country music features simple themes and melodies describing day-to-day situations and the feelings of country people. Many people appreciate this music because of the emotions expressed by country music songs.
A second origin of American popular music is the blues. It depicts mostly sad feelings reflecting the difficult lives of American blacks. It is usually played and sung by black musicians, but is popular with all Americans.
Rock music is a newer form of music. This music style, featuring fast and repetitious rhythms, was influenced by blues and country music. It was first known as rock-and-roll in the 1950s. Since then here have been many forms of rock music: hard rock, soft rock, disco music and others. Many performers of popular music are young musicians.
American popular music is marketed to a demanding audience. Now popular songs are heard on the radio several times a day. Some songs have become popular all over the world. People hear these songs sung in their original English or sometimes translated into other languages. The words may differ but the enjoyment of the music is universal.
Questions:
11. Why is American music so popular in all countries?
A. Because it depicts the feeling of the common people.
B. Because it has a fast pace and rhythmic beat.
C. Because it has simple themes.
D. Because its lyrics are in English.
12. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Popular music is the most important export of America.
B. People enjoy country music because it expresses their sad feelings.
C. The blues is usually played by black musicians.
D. Country music mainly describes the difficult lives of Americans.
13. Which of the following is true of rock music?
A. It was influenced by the blues and country music.
B. It has many different forms.
C. It has fast and repetitious rhythms.
D. All of the above.
Passage 3
In western culture music is regarded as good by birth, and sounds that are welcome are said to be “music to the ears”. In some other cultures, for example, Islamic culture, it is of low value, associated with sin and evil. In the West and in the high cultures of Asia, it is said that there are three types of music. First, classical music, composed and performed by trained professionals originally under the support of courts and religious establishments; second, folk music, shared by the population at large and passed on orally, and third, popular music, performed by professionals, spread through radio, television, records, film, and print, and consumed by the urban mass public.
Music is a major component in religious services, theater, and entertainment of all sorts. The most universal use of music is as a part of religious ritual. In some tribal societies, music appears to serve as a special form of communication with supernatural beings. Another less obvious function of music is social adherence. For most social groups, music can serve as a powerful symbol. Members of most societies share keen feelings as to what kind of music they belong to. In a more general sense, music may express the central social values of a society. In western music, the interrelationship of conductor and orchestra symbolizes the need for strong cooperation among various kinds of specialists in a modern industrial society.
