Hello my friend

The Orchid Pavilion located in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province,

has been regarded as a masterpiece by the calligraphers of all dynasties.

This calligraphy is said to have been completed

by Wang Xizhi after drinking.

Later, although he rewrote it several times,

it was not as good as the first one.

For this, he once sighed:

"I must have been assisted by a divine power,

otherwise I couldn’t make it."

Therefore, he himself cherished it very much

and passed it on to the seventh generation as a family treasure.

However, the original work did not escape the fate of

being acquired by the emperor's family.

It was obtained by Li Shimin (598—649),

the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty
收藏

who was also a fine calligrapher.

Some believe that the emperor had Wang Xizhi’s work buried

with him after his death.

It has also become a mystery

that later generations continue to explore.

known as 'seal', 'official', 'regular', 'cursive', and 'running'.

beyond the grasp of the Western learners.

It is partially true

because it can only be understood better

including brushwork, structure, composition, and ink style.

There are three structural forms which are essential to calligraphy.

They are strokes, characters and lines,

the combination of which demonstrates the beauty of the work.

It is vital to know that

the writing process consists of the dynamics

while controlling the speed and movement of the brush.

This is the main difficulty in writing with a brush

and the charm of calligraphy.

In ancient China people believed that

there was an interdependent relationship

between calligraphy and painting,

as the materials for both arts are identical:

silk or paper as a support,

brush as a tool and ink as a medium (paintings may also use colors).

Although the use of silk by artists

reached its height in the Song Dynasty (960-1279),

high-grade paper was already gaining prominence.

The paper mostly used by calligraphers and painters

to write a classical poem or poetic lines describing the scenes

and objects on the picture
和物体

in order to perfect the beauty of the art piece.

Sometimes the painter himself or herself writes a poem,

which adds more charm and taste to the painting.

In the past, an artist who was good at poetry,

calligraphy and painting

was called a “person with three wonderful talents.”

Since the Tang Dynasty,

and painters is to emerge into a state of mind

where one can live with both freedom and discipline;

this is the beauty of a paradoxical life.

It is like the concept of yin and yang,

which not only embodies the interplay of black and white,

but also that of the lightness and thickness of brush strokes,

and the movement and stillness of the calligrapher or painter.

The secret of such movement requires personal refinement

in the mastery of equilibrium(centrality) and harmony, in Chinese equilibrium is called Zhong (中)、harmony is called He(和) .

As described in the Book of the Mean,

“Before delight, anger, sadness and happiness are all expressed;

the mind is in a state of equilibrium.

Once they are expressed, yet in a moderate way,

the mind is in a state of harmony.

This equilibrium is the essence of all creatures,

and this harmony is the universal principle followed by all creatures.

In a state of equilibrium and harmony,
致中和

Heaven and Earth are in a proper order, and the myriad creatures flourish.”

when the most prestigious calligrapher Wang Xizi described the gathering,

he shared with us his feelings about

the spiritual world of the ancient literati.

“Now when men come together,

they let their thoughts travel to the past and to the present.

Some enjoy a quiet conversation indoors

and others play about outdoors,

occupied by their respective passions.

The forms of amusement differ according to temperaments,

but when each has found what one truly desires,

one is content and never feels old.

Then as time passes on and one is tired of that pursuit,

it seems that what was once the source of fascination,

not so long ago, has become a mere memory.

What a thought!

In addition, whether as individuals we live a long life or not,

we all return to nothingness.

The ancients regarded death as the great question.

Is it not sad to think of this?
