Hello, everyone.
I'm Xu Wei from Yunnan Normal University.
Welcome to my course---The Tourism Culture in Yunnan.
Before we start, I have some questions for you.
Do you know the implication of the name “Yunnan”?
Why does Yunnan Province always attract scholars,
musicians, artists, photographers and tourists?
Which part of Yunnan attracts you most ?
Do you expect to travel to Yunnan yourself?
Please keep these questions in your mind, and remember:
Tourism is a good carrier of culture!
In this course, I will guide you to explore the colorful province of Yunnan.
Yunnan is a mysterious land abundant in plants, wild animals, minerals, majestic landscapes,
varied landforms, colorful ethnic cultures, and brilliant civilizations from ancient times.
As a frontier province,
Yunnan functions as an important land gateway of China to South and Southeast Asia
due to its favorable location and convenient transportation.
With the rapid development of tourism,
the comprehensive construction and economy of Yunnan have been greatly improved.
At present, Yunnan has become a significant tourist province in western China.
Today, let's begin with the cultural meaning of the name “Yunnan”.
How did Yunnan become the name of a place?
Let me explain the origin of the name “Yunnan”.
Literally, Yunnan means “south of the clouds” in Chinese.
The origin of this word can be traced back to the Han Dynasty in Chinese history.
According to the record of A General History of Yunnan,
a man saw fantastic cloud views in the south of China,
and reported this to Emperor Wudi.
In ancient China,
emperors always paid special attention to auspicious views
that could be taken as an omen of prosperity.
The fantastic cloud view was regarded as an omen to show the successful reign of the emperor.
Therefore, the emperor immediately sent his men to look for the place with enchanting clouds.
Finally, his men identified the place, and that place was named “Yunnan”,
meaning a place south of the clouds.
Then, Emperor Wudi ordered them to set up a county there.
That county was called “Yunnan”.
It was the first time that “Yunnan” officially appeared as the name for a place in Chinese history.
Here, please be careful to note:
Yunnan County was not the Yunnan Province we know today.
In fact, that county is the present Xiangyun County in Yunnan province.
The present name of the county Xiangyun means “auspicious clouds”,
which remains the origin of the name “Yunnan”.
Historically speaking, Yunnan was well-known for these wonderful clouds.
In fact, clouds in Yunnan match this name very well due to their changeable,
graceful and enchanting appearances.
The remarkable views of clouds here have been praised by writers
and poets for hundreds of years.
So, do not leave Yunnan without taking pictures of the clouds here.
After understanding ancient Yunnan,
let's switch to the present-day Yunnan Province.
Where is Yunnan Province? Please look at the map.
Yunnan, located in the southwest of China,
neighbors Tibet Autonomous Region on the northwest,
Sichuan Province on the north,
Guizhou Province on the northeast
and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on the east.
As a frontier province, Yunnan borders on Vietnam on the southeast,
Laos on the south
and Burma on the west
As an important gateway from China to Southeast and South Asia,
Yunnan is connected to Thailand and Cambodia by rivers and roads.
There are rivers and mountains running across the borders.
Due to the rich geographical landscapes,
close economic and cultural ties between Southeast Asia
and Yunnan have been long established since ancient times.
How big is Yunnan province?
Stretching 864.9 kilometers from the east to the west
and 990 kilometers from the south to the north,
Yunnan covers an area of 394,000 square kilometers,
resembling the shape of a peacock in his pride.
The size of Yunnan is slightly larger than the land area of Japan
which covers 377,000 square kilometers.
The size of Yunnan accounts for 4.1% of the total land area of China.
It is the 8th largest province in China after Xinjiang,Tibet,Qinghai,
Heilongjiang, Sichuan, Gansu and Inner Mongolia.
Up to now,
we have understood the origin of the name “Yunnan”
and the basic facts of Yunnan.
I bet you have already got a general picture of Yunnan.
Next time,
I'm going to show Yunnan from seven aspects.
That's all for today.
Thank you for listening.
See you next time.
