In 3.2, Qiliang shows us how to use a structured mental map, the result of his information processing effort, to guide his retelling (复述). However, as we haven't received any memory training, it is perhaps not wise for our on-line learners to practice information processing with retelling at this stage. It's perhaps easier to simply ask yourself "what's the structure of the speech that I have just listened to". Ask yourself often and practice with any type of materials (speech, Ted talks, news, documentaries, anything you can think of). 

 

Now please listen to the attached BBC news (please download the attached file). The topic is "banned chemicals in deep sea". At this stage of training, please focus on the macro-structure and main points. 

 

After listening, try to come up with a structure of the news in your mind. You may compare your version with the version we provide below, which is only one version out of many possibilities. Don't worry if your structure differs from what's offered below. 

 

Structure of the news:

 

Part 1 Overview of the finding

Who: researchers of University of Newcastle; How: deep sea landersWhere: Deep trenches down the Pacific Ocean; What: Residues of banned chemicals in collected sea creatures 



Part 2 Why (How)

1. chemicals directly sank to the bottom

2. chemicals consumed by sea animals whose corpses sank to the bottom



Part 3 Implications

Every part of the earth is affected; What’s done cannot be undone
