1. What are cultural differences in naming systems and customs related to business card exchange?
2.Case study: Read and analyze the following case.
Should leaders of countries have separate etiquette and protocol from the rest of the business world?
Obama greeted emperor Akihito, whose father was Japanese emperor when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, with a simultaneous handshake and a very deep bow. This generated a criticism in the United States because Obama bowed very deeply. It also created a criticism because he bowed to the leader of a foreign country.
U.S. presidents from both political parties often have been criticized for attempts to be culturally sensitive to high-ranking foreigners. Former U.S. President George W. Bush, a republican, was criticized for holding Saudi crown prince’s hand in 2005 as they walked together. This is a traditional sign of friendship in the Middle East. In 1994, former U.S. President Clinton was criticized for nearly bowing to Akihito.
Upright handshakes between Akihito and other world leaders are commonplace. Former U.S. Vice president Dick Cheney gave Akihito a straight-backed handshake and Gen. Douglas MacArthur was photographed standing with his hands on his hips next to Hirohito.
A bow is a sign of respect in the Japanese culture. Greeting rituals such as kisses, handshakes and bows vary from country to country and reflect cultural values. Failure to greet properly in a foreign country may show signs of disrespect but following protocol and respecting other cultures may generate criticism in the leaders’ home country. Do you think there should be special etiquette and protocol for country leaders?

3. Case Study: read the following case and analyze what factors contributed to KFC’s success in the Mainland?
KFC has been one of the most famous international brands in urban China since it opened its first western-style fast food restaurant in Beijing in 1987. In the list of Chinese consumer’s most favorite well-known international brands, KFC stood on top one. Since its operation in China, it has carried out aggressive advertising in China. one feature noticeable in KFC’s commercials is its representation of an ancient art form of China-Beijing Opera. It is interesting to find a U.S. fast food brand presenting a declining traditional art and attaching pop culture elements with it. One of the commercials also depicts a Beijing opera actor in costume and with make-up having his father and son. The screen is divided into two parts: The father is singing Beijing opera in the left room while the son is dancing with hip-hop music in the right room. They finally get to the reconcilement by eating the old Beijing Chicken Roll served by mother.
In addition to their advertising effort, they also provide diversity in their product line. They provide old Beijing Chicken Roll, a wrap modeled after the way Peking duck is served, has fried chicken inside and is accompanied with green.
