the Digestive System
Also known as the gastrointestinal
or alimentary system,
the digestive system
is made up of the
digestive tract
from the mouth to the anus
and its associated glands and organs
that are involved in the ingestion,
digestion, absorption
of food
and the defecation of solid waste
materials from the body
The function of the digestive system
is to prepare food
for intake by body cells
Nutrients must be broken down
by mechanical and chemical means
into molecules
that are small enough to be absorbed
by circulation
Within cells
the nutrients are used for energy
and for rebuilding vital cell components
