这篇文章给我们提供了一个新的角度来看待大众传媒在现代国家发挥的作用。

该文章提出了一个的观点，即现代大众传媒是自由民主国家社会凝聚力的主要来源。这听起来十分不可思议，在我们眼中，现代的大众传媒由于其内容复杂且体系巨大，其所提供的信息也十分驳杂，良莠不齐。在封建社会，媒体的作用主要体现宣传通知阶级的力量（如果当时有媒体的话）。而现代的媒体则越来越需要在众多的媒体同行中吸引读者的有限的注意力。

文章的主要观点是，在现代激烈的竞争下，一个媒体无法满足所有受众的要求，不同的媒体就会针对特定的受众，来吸引他们的注意力。将其关注者根据年龄，性别，地区，宗教，政治，爱好和无数其他特殊兴趣区分起来，并将相同的受众聚集起来，以此来形成凝聚力。

社会凝聚力通常指把人们紧密聚合在一起的某种社会吸引力。社会凝聚力来源于血脉、文化、阶级地位等等。凝聚力是维系社会生存的最基本的力量，它使社会和社会组织生存下去，从而把分散的个人力量聚合为整体组织的力量和社会的力量，并产生出远远超出个人和小组织力量总和的巨大力量，产生出丰富复杂的社会组织现象，产生社会和组织的整体功能。
