Hello everyone

welcome to the lecture

We are going to learn the third part of Unit 8

一些常用的习语和短语

使用习语和短语通常会使语言生动有趣

但是理解起来却不那么容易

我们要掌握推断技巧

听懂字里行间的意思从而更好地理解听到的内容

For example

in the sentence It’s raining cats and dogs

the expression “rain cats and dogs”

is an idiom used as a metaphor隐喻 to mean rain very heavily

Of course not real cats and dogs

In a broad sense

idioms may include

Phrases are a group of words that work together

to communicate a particular idea or meaning

for example

Since idioms and phrases usually have set meanings

they pose great challenges for listening comprehension

However many times we can use the context

to guess their meanings

For example

Now you’re going to listen to an interview

in which Larry Smith

editor of an online magazine

talks about some short life stories his magazine collected

The language in the interview has a lively and colloquial style

containing a number of phrases and idioms

Try to guess meanings of idioms and phrases from the context

Task one listen to the interview

and fill in the blanks
