Module 10 Teaching Listening and Speaking

Guidelines for Teaching Listening

Given the importance of listening well to maximize success in and out of school, you might wonder if there are any guidelines for teaching it. In reviewing research on listening comprehension, we have developed seven guidelines for instruction before, during, and after listening. They are as follows:

Before Listening

1. Set a goal.

According to Funk and Funk (1989), it’s important to have a goal or purpose for every listening activity. Stating a purpose will give students guidance to know where to focus, enabling them to achieve success.

2. Build Background.

Help students connect what they already know with what they will hear in the audio story by asking questions about their personal experiences with the topic. Explain what students need to understand before listening, preview vocabulary words, invite them to think about relevant prior knowledge, anticipate the subject of the story, or otherwise engage actively in preparing for the story.

3. Prepare the Environment.

If playing the story out loud to the whole class, minimize distraction by making the environment at home or in school as quiet as possible. Use headphones for listening when possible.

4. Introduce Listening Strategies

Introduce tools and strategies for successful listening.

During Listening

5. Scaffold Note-Taking.

Students can use a listening organizer to help them focus on important ideas and details while listening to the story, which can help to deepen their understanding. Listening organizers might include T-charts, Venn diagrams, or a blank page to keep track of a character’s actions in the story. Such organizers can guide students in taking notes to help them focus their listening and teach them strategies to support comprehension in other contexts.

6. Explain Problem-Solving Strategies.

If students do not understand a word or concept, they can use clues from the story to make a guess. If they are listening independently, they can stop the audio and think or listen again as needed to ensure understanding. They can be “problem-solving listeners.” These strategies should be taught before students begin listening with reminders provided as needed.

After Listening

7. Reflect on the Audio Story.

Engage students in synthesizing what they learned from listening to the story with a focus on key understanding goals. For example, ask students to respond to listening comprehension questions in writing and then share their responses with a partner, small group, or the whole class. Discuss key themes in the story and encourage students to make connections to other texts or experiences. Students can respond to questions about the story through writing, speaking in conversation, recording themselves speaking, or a combination.

How to Teach English Conversation | Teaching English Speaking

Many foreign ESL teachers abroad, especially in places like South Korea, teach predominantly English conversation classes. Some teachers (and students too!) have the perception that teaching English conversation involves just “talking” to the students. Keep on reading to find out how to teach conversational English and have an awesome English conversation class.

Free talking does have a role in helping students learn English. However, it shouldn’t be the only thing we do in our English conversation classes. Find out all the details you need to know about how to teach English conversation.

Teaching English Conversation: More than just Free Talking

There is far more to English conversation than just free talking. In my first year of teaching, I was given a “free-talking” class with middle school students. My boss told me to just talk to them. The students wanted to just hang out and speak in English.

After a couple of weeks of this, I felt like nobody was actually learning anything! The students were just making the same mistakes, over and over again. I introduced a bit of structure, introduced some new grammar and vocabulary, and found that the class went much more smoothly.

The best part? The students improved their English skills! Teaching conversational English can be done in a much better way. Check out these tips and tricks for English conversation classes.

English Conversation Activity Ideas

Try out these games and activities that are guaranteed to get your students talking. The best part about them is that you can target some specific grammar or vocabulary, and push students to integrate these things into their previous knowledge base.

This is better than free talking because I find that students often just use the same few grammatical structures and 100-200 vocabulary words they always use.

Partner Conversation Starters/Role-Plays: An excellent way to get even low-level students started with English conversation. These students can speak in English to each other if you give them the structure to be able to do it.

Small Talk ESL Activity: Small talk is a vital, yet often neglected aspect of English conversation. Give your students some serious practice in it with this activity. It’s fun, challenging and has an element of competition to it.

Advanced English Conversation Dialogues: Check out this book on Amazon if you want to help your students learn idioms and phrases in American English through dialogues.

Surveys: I love a good ESL survey because they cover all 4-skills, are completely student-centered and can cover just about any grammar or vocabulary point. I use them so often in my own classes that my students let out a bit of a sigh, but I know they secretly love them.

ESL Pronunciation Activities: Students from most countries struggle with certain aspects of English pronunciation. Here are some of my favorite games and activities to work on this specific speaking skill. It’s conversational English classes made easy.

Test Teach Test: Consider mixing things up a little bit and trying something new. This style of teaching directly targets students’ needs but does require some planning on the fly. Try it out for a nice change of page.
