Huaqing Hot Spring is situated at the foot of Lishan Mt., 30 kilometers east of the city of Xi’an. Lishan is a branch of the Qinling Mountain range. Historically, construction of the buildings in Huaqing Hot Spring was undertaken in Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang Dynasties, with that in the Tang Dynasty as the most flourishing. During the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Tai Zong ordered the construction of the hot springs palace; hence the present name –Huaqing Hot Spring. The Huaqing Hot Spring was destroyed during An Lushan and Shi Siming Rebellion at the end of the Tang Dynasty. The present site is only a small part of the original Huaqing palace. Today, when we get there, we can also see the relics of the Court of Eternal Youth which had been unearthed in recent years and has been on display in a museum in the hot spring. The Court of the Eternal Youth is the very building where most of the romance between Emperor Xuan Zong and his concubine Yang took place. Bai Juyi, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty, made reference to this palace and the tragedy of the royal couple in his poem “Song of Everlasting Sorrow”.
Attractions Inside Huaqing Hot Spring
Huaqing pool which we see today was rebuilt on the site of the Qing Dynasty structure. The palace covers an area of 85,560 square meters.
Entering the east gate of the Huaqing Hot Spring, you will see the Nine-Dragon Pool, the Frost Flying Hall and so on. All these structures were rebuilt in 1959 according to the Tang Dynasty architecture style.
The Nine Dragon Pool
There is a legend about this pool. It is said that the central Shaanxi Plain was once stricken by a severe drought. By the order of Jade Emperor, an old dragon came with eight young ones, and made rain there. Yet when the disaster was just abating, the dragons lowered their guard and relaxed, and the drought became serious again. Jade Emperor became very angry at them and kept the young dragons under the jade causeway to make them spout clear water all day long. He had the old dragon confined to the bottom of the Roaring Dragon Waterside Pavilion.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is on the Nine Dragon Pool that the popular real-scene evening show-- Song of Everlasting Sorrow is performed. The show is about the romantic but tragic love story between Emperor Xu Zong and Lady Yang
The Frost Flying Hall
The Tang Emperor Xuan Zong and his favorite concubine Yang used to make their home here. It was very cold in winter in Chang’an. So Emperor Xuan Zong always spent winter here. It was said that the steam from the hot spring pool in front of the hall went straight up and turned into frost in the wind overhead. Therefore, the hall was named the Frost Flying Hall.
The Xi’an Incident
Climb the steps east of the source of the hot springs, you will see the Five Room Hall. The place is so called because it consists of five rooms. During the World War Two, the Japanese invaded China and they had already occupied the three provinces in Northern China by 1936. This was a critical time for the Chinese nation. Jiang Kaishek, the China Nationalists’ leader, was reluctant to fight against the Japanese invaders because he thought the Chinese Communist Party was the most dangerous enemy. During his stay in Huaqing Hot Spring in 1936, Jiang Kaishek stayed in the middle room of the Five Room Hall. His two generals, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng tried to persuade him to stop the civil war and fight against the Japanese invaders. However, Jiang Kaishek refused. So the two generals started the Xi’an Incident. On December 12, 1936, the two generals ordered their soldiers surrounded the Hot Spring and caught Jiang Kaishek. In order to avoid a civil war and try to establish a national united front for the resistance against Japan, the Chinese Communist Party stood for a peaceful settlement of the incident, and finally the incident was settled peacefully. The peaceful settlement of the incident put an end to the internal war. Moreover. It showed that the co-operative relationship between the Communist and Nationalist arrived at a new stage. It thus has become an important turning point in modern Chinese history.
The Remonstration Pavilion
Climbing the steps along the way, you will see a pavilion. It is the Remonstration Pavilion.
The Source of the Hot Springs
There are altogether four hot springs inside the Site. The total volume of flow is more than 112 tons per hour. The temperature of these four springs is 43℃ or 109℉. The water contains nine sorts of minerals including limes, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate and others. It is good for bathing, as well as for curing arthritis and some skin diseases.
Huaqing Imperial Pool Museum
In April 1982, on a construction site that was well under way, the ruins of the Imperial Pools in the Tang-Dynasty Huaqing Palace were discovered. After excavation and sorting out the information at hand, archaeologists found the ruins of the five pools in an area of 4,200 square meters. They proved them to be the Star Pool, the Lotus Flower Pool, the Crabapple Pool, the Crown Prince Pool and the Shangshi Pool, all of which were recorded in history. The Museum of the Imperial Pools in the Tang-Dynasty Huaqing Palace was built on their ruins and was opened to public in October 1990.“The Crabapple Pool” was specially built by the order of Emperor Xuan Zong for his favorite lady Yang Yuhuan to bathe in. Therefore, it was also called Lady Yang's Pool. The Lotus Flower pool, also named the Imperial Nine Dragon Pool, was built for the emperor; the Crown Prince Pool, as its name suggests, was for the crown prince; the Shangshi Pool was for ministers and officials; while the Star Pool was believed to be built of much earlier age.
The Beacon Tower
On the top of Mt. Li is the Beacon Tower. Beacon Tower was mostly built at the top of the mountain to give alarm in ancient times. It is said that in the Western Zhou Dynasty, on the peak of every mountain there was a beacon tower. Whenever the enemy came, the soldiers would make signals by burning wolf's droppings to seek help from other vassal states. Why were wolf's droppings used? It is said that when wolf's droppings were burned, their smoke went straight up to the sky, and people could see it from a long way off.
