Tang Tri-color Prcelain Repicas 唐三彩复制品

Xi’an was the capital city of the Tang Dynasty, thus its historical prosperity left Xi’an with many cultural relics, especially Tang Tri-color Porcelain Replicas, which is the generic name for the color-glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty. They can be great gifts for your friends after your tour in China.

Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Works 中国书画作品

Calligraphy and painting are regarded as two treasures in China. Together with Qin, the ancient Zheng, and Qi, the chess, they formed the four skills for a learned and elegant scholar to pursue in ancient times. They were also held as a good exercise to cultivate one's temperament.

Chinese calligraphy or shufa, the art of writing Chinese Characters, boasts a long history. Calligraphy works come in 5 traditional fonts. They are regular script, seal script, official script, cursive hand and running hand. Masters take the characters as the carrier of their thought, so there is no need to understand Chinese characters to appreciate the beauty. Today, when learning Chinese calligraphy, you will be usually taught the regular script and running hand.

Chinese painting and calligraphy are almost always mentioned in the same breath. Traditional Chinese Painting is famous all over the world for its original style and distinctive national features. In terms of mode of expression, traditional Chinese painting mainly falls into two schools. The Xieyi School, literally 'painting the feeling', marked by exaggeration of form and liberal use of ink; another school called Gongbi, meaning meticulous brushwork, characterized by strict and detailed representation of the subject.

Chinese calligraphy and painting works can be seen all over China. Yet Xi’an offers much more impressive masterpieces because of its flocks of artists. For example, in the Shuyuanmen Gate area of Xi’an, vendors sell calligraphy and painting supplies. Those vendors are more than vendors. They are very talented artists themselves. Their shops work more like a studio than a sales outlet.

Peasant Paintings 农民画

Huxian County in Shannxi province is well-known for its peasant paintings. With several thousand amateur artists, this county boasts a long history of traditional arts and crafts such as paintings, embroidery and knitting. Among the peasants ranging from 10 to 60 years old, many can draw well. The Huxian peasant paintings originated in 1958. Since then, peasants in Huxian have created hundreds of thousands of artistic paintings. They paint in a distinctive style, with a clear plain sketch and strong color contrast paint, by means of blackboard, newspapers, murals, gouaches, paper-cuts, wood-cuts and slides.

Those peasant paintings mainly reflect the local people’s daily life, including the festival, parade, harvest, music, village traditions, animals, kitchen work, and the life of children. You can discover a primitive style with child-like figures and bright colors through those paintings. You may be affected by the optimistic life altitudes reflected on these colorful and attractive paintings.

Painted Clay Figures泥塑

Fengxiang, Shaanxi province is well-known for its painted clay figurines, which has been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. Having been molded, covered with a layer of white paint, outlined, coloured and varnished, a lively clay figurine is finally completed.

The painted clay figures exclusively reveal the local life through their elegant styles and vivid shapes. The artisans use almost everything they can lay their hands on. Their subjects include opera facial make-ups, auspicious patterns, folklores, historic stories, native rural life and so on. The figurines can be divided into three categories: hanging ornaments, desk ornaments and toys. The figurines show a lot of simplicity and exaggeration, vividness and uniqueness. Bright colors, mainly red, green and yellow, are mostly adopted.
