General Introduction to the Show

The Song of Everlasting Sorrow Show is a real-scene performance. It is put on right on the Nine Dragon Pool and is presented from April to October in Huaqing Hot Spring in Lintong District, east of Xi’an city. The show is based on a Chinese poem called “Song of Everlasting Sorrow” which recounts the romantic yet tragic love story between Emperor Xuan Zong, the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty, and Yang Yuhuan, his favorite concubine.


Love Story Between Emperor Xuan Zong and Lady Yang

Emperor Xuan Zong fell in love with the beautiful Lady Yang at first sight and took her into the palace as his concubine. Yang was not only beautiful, but also very talented in music and dancing. The Emperor loved her so much that he even built her a pool where she could take a bath, a scene that has become one of the most spectacular in the show. Lady Yang diverted the Emperor’s focus from his ruling duties and caused much trouble to his country that led to a military coup.The ministers and the soldiers around Emperor Xuan Zong thought that it was the concubine Yang Yuhuan who had caused the chaos. Later under the pressure, the Emperor had his favorite concubine killed to save the country,

The romantic yet tragic love story between Emperor Xuan Zong and his favorite concubine Lady Yang in the Tang Dynasty has always been popular among visitors who come to the Huaqing Hot Spring.


Designing of the Show

The Song of Everlasting Sorrow Evening Show is a dancing and music masterpiece. There are ponds and pavilions, bridges, corridors and so on in the background. The performance is in the magnificent open air door theatre and is presented on the real-scene in Huaqing Palace with backdrop of Mount Li. It incorporates the use of classic music and dance, water, mountain, fire, high-tech lighting, movable stages, narrative poem, acoustics and special effects, with the perfect costumes, dancers and performers. As the lights projected onto it, all of Mt. Li becomes a part of the scenery with the water surrounding the stage. The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” reenacts the magnificent era of the Tang Dynasty. Based on the touching story of an emperor and his concubine, the show allows the audience to travel back in time to appreciate the love that happened at the foot of Lishan Mountain 1300 years ago, and experience the culture of the flourishing Tang Dynasty.


Accolades and Awards of the Show

 “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow Evening Show” has won several top accolades and awards and has been crowned as one of China’s must-see performances. It is the first show in China to:

1.     be staged against the backdrop of real mountains, lakes and an ancient architectural complex instead of a theatre.

2.     revive a complete historical love story at the very scene of its occurrence.

3.     utilize a lifting stage through water, Vegas-style pyrotechnics, and the largest foldable LED screen in Asia

If you are a lover of music, dance, art, culture and theatre, then you absolutely have to see “the Song of Everlasting Sorrow Evening Show”. The performance consists of 4 parts，11 scenes and lasts 70 minutes. The four parts include “Fall in Love”, ‘A Sweet Couple’, “Goodbye to Love’, and “Meet Again on Fairyland”. You can witness the love that took place about 1300 years ago at the foot of Mount Li, and experience the culture of the glorious era of Tang Dynasty.
