Brief Introduction to Qin Terracotta Warriors

There are over 7000 terra-cotta warriors excavated. According to the experts, most of the warriors’ heads are identical, and only eight molds were used to shape their heads. However, distinctive surface features were added with clay after assembly. As a result, each terra-cotta soldier appears to be unique in its facial features, revealin a high level of craftsmanship and artistry.

Just glancing at the Warriors, a person can see that these statues are not all the same. This is most noticeable in the faces. Some have thin faces, some have fuller faces, some have round, some square and some long. And it’s not just the face shapes that vary. Great care was put into ensuring that facial features were diverse enough to give each statue an individual appearance. Even if many have the same facial shape, there are a variety of eyebrows, noses, mustaches, chins, foreheads, cheekbones, lips, head angles, ornamentation and hairstyles.

Beyond the variety of heads and faces, while a majority of them are standing upright, the soldiers stand with a variety of postures and stances: some are leaning forward slightly; some are standing at full attention. No matter how they are standing, they all have arms at different angles with their hands in varying positions.

Besides the soldiers, the army includes 600 horses and almost 100 chariots which carry officers and riders and have either a two, three, or four-horse team. There are also many weapons found, such as swords, halberds, spears, bows and crossbows. These weapons had kept their sharp edges, and each was inscribed with their manufacturer and supervisor.

After years of display and publicity since they were excavated, the Qin terracotta warriors and horses become even more popular today. Their imitations are not only accepted as souvenirs and gifts by both Chinese and foreign tourists, but also accepted by enterprises and public organizations as decorations that can promote their reputation and better demonstrate their artistic tastes.

Reasons for the Replicas' Popularity

There are probably three reasons for the popularity of the terra-cotta figures: Firstly, the imitations are made strictly after the real ones. And they resemble the real ones in almost every detail such as the postures, the hairstyle, the clothing and the facial features. In order to promote the artistic taste of the imitations, some experts were hired to examine and revise them so that the original artistic beauty can be sufficiently conveyed.

Secondly, imitations are made of all sizes to meet the needs of different tourists. The ones of original size are suitable for displays in art galleries, history museums, art exhibition halls and big hotels. Half-sized or one-quarter-sized ones are suitable for decoration of family or guest receiving places. While the portable mini-sized ones are good gifts for both friends and relatives. Tourists of all nationalities can never fail to find the imitations of the right size they want.

Besides, the imitations are made in a wide variety including general figures, soldier figures, standing soldiers, kneeling soldiers, etc. Besides soldiers, there are also horses and chariot figures. With the progress of excavation and restoration, a lot of imitation of new kinds will be available for tourists' choice.
