In this lesson, we introduced some signs in the tram station. There are also many signs inside the railway station in Japan. For example, the sign in the first picture can be seen every few meters on the platform. It represents the location and characteristics of the tram door and carriages.
We have already mentioned that the colors are the same as the color that distinguishes the routes on the map. “横須賀線（よこすかせん）” in the leftmost box is the name of the railway line while “11両（りょう）” is the number of the carriage. “乗車口（じょうしゃぐち）” means “gate” while “8（はち）号車（ごうしゃ）乗車口（じょうしゃぐち）” means “gate at the 8th carriage”. The number of carriages forming varies on different routes and other situations, and there are several types and forms. For example, there are 6-carriages, 10-carriages, 11-carriages, etc. While the train stops at each station, the position of the door is different based on different numbers of the carriages. Therefore, this sign can tell you that the 8th carriage will stop here if the coming train have 11-carriages. As for the number of carriages on the train, you can look at the LCD screen on the platform. For example, in the second attachment, it shows the LCD screen on the platform. On the far left is the type of coming train or the name of the railway line. The word “数字+両” beside it indicates the number of carriages on the train. We will also introduce the LCD screen in the next section.
“弱冷房車 (じゃくれいぼうしゃ)” that written in the light blue box on the right side in the picture indicates that the temperature of this compartment will be adjusted appropriately during the cold season. While in summer, many female passengers cannot stand as the temperature of the air conditioner is too low. “優先席 (ゆうせんせき)” in green on the far right indicates that there are priority seats for this carriage near the door. We will introduce more about “優先席” in the next discussion.
