Lesson 5 (2) Traditional habits of Japanese meals- Discussion:

There are some traditional habits in having Japanese meals. Here we introduce two habits that must be followed. Firstly, hold the rice bowl. In principle, it’s not a big and heavy bowl. When eating, the bowl should not be put on the table but should be picked up. Please refer to the attachment. Besides, you have to lift your elbow (that picks up the bowl), and should not put the elbow on the table. Secondly, a bowl of miso soup is usually served together with a home-cooked meal. It is called “味噌汁(みそしる)”. In principle, this soup can only be served once. There are still many other traditional habits. For example, say “いただきます” before we eat, and “ごちそうさまでした” after we had finished eating. Actually, it is not mandatory. You can say them depending on the occasion, such as having dinner with someone you don't know well, or in a more formal setting.
