It is quite taboo for Japanese to communicate with each other in the bathroom. So, in principle, people do not talk in the bathroom, and in order to drown out the sound of you going about your business, there’s a feature that simulates the sound of flushing water. Of course, the locks on every cubicle are tightly locked. So if you’re not sure whether there’s anyone inside, try knocking on the door once or twice. If there’s someone inside, that person will answer you. However, since the Japanese are not used to talking in the bathroom, the people inside may not answer you. Therefore, if someone knocks on your door, you just have to knock twice. Then they’ll know the cubicle is occupied.
