Lesson 8 (1) Discussion

Post offices in Japan are closed on weekends except for the larger ones, some of which have 24-hour Service Windows. It is not only the post offices but also the banks. Banks in Japan close at 3 p.m. and are closed on weekends. The reason why the banks close early is that the banks have to deal with the receipts and payments of the day after 3 pm. There is a service charge for ATM withdrawals on weekends or during non-working hours. Although Japan also has courier services such as express delivery, the post office still plays an important role in mail delivery. In this lesson, the staff at the post office told Mr. Satou that it would take about two months if the goods were shipped by sea. In fact, there are many cases in which the goods can be delivered within a month depending on the situation.
