Chapter 1 General Virology

1. Describe the structure and composition of viruses; 

2. Describe general steps of viral replication and compare the replication cycles of DNA & RNA viruses;

3. Discuss the mechanisms of viral variation;

4. Illustrate the different types of viral infection;

5. Characterize the effects of viral infection on cells;

6. List at least three viruses associated with malignant tumors in human.

 

Chapter 2 Viruses Transmitted Through Respiratory Route

1. Describe the structure of influenza A virus, and analyze the target points of anti-flu drugs;

2. Explain how to type and subtype of influenza viruses; 

3. Differentiate antigenic drift and shift;

4. List S&S of influenza illness; 

5. Compare the differences between orthomyxoviruses and paramyxoviruses;

6. List the important paramyxoviruses and coronaviruses and their associated diseases.

 

Chapter 3 Viruses Transmitted Through Fecal-oral Route

1. Describe the biological properties (e.g. core, receptor-binding site, no envelope) of enteroviruses, and discuss the relationship between these properties and the clinical findings.

2. List the clinical conditions caused by enteroviruses and viruses causing acute gastroenteritis;

3. Discuss the possibility of the eradication of poliomyelitis;

4. Compare the pathogenicity of enteroviruses with that of viruses causing acute gastroenteritis.

 

Chapter 4 HIV

1. Describe the biological properties of HIV(including viral structures, target cell types, replication cycle, etc);

2. List the routes of transmission, and risk factors, explain the pathogenicity of HIV infection and the clinical course of AIDS;

3. Know how to apply the proper lab tests for diagnosis, and formulate the comprehensive measures for treatment,prevention and control.

 

Chapter 5 Herpes Viruses

1. Describe the common characteristics of human herpesviruses;

2. List the clinical diseases caused by HSV, VZV, CMV, EBV, HHV-6 and HHV-8;

3. Give examples of latent infection and explain the triggers for the reactivation;

4. Explain “TORCH”.

 

Chapter 6 Hepatitis Viruses

1. List the six hepatitis viruses.

2. Describe the structure of HAV and HBV virions.

3. Describe the pathogenicity (source of the infection, transmission routes, pathogenesis) of HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV and HEV.

4. Compare and contrast the clinical findings of HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV and HEV infections.

5. Compare the lab diagnoses of HAV, HBV and HCV.

6. Describe the treatment and prevention of HAV, HBV and HCV.

 

Chapter 7 Other Important Human Viruses

Section 1 Arbovirus

1. List the important arboviruses and the associated diseases;

2. Describe the biological properties, pathogenicity, immunity and prevention of dengue virus.

 

Section 2 Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses

1. List the important hemorrhagic fever viruses, and describe their common properties.

2. Discuss the sources, transmission routes and clinical findings of hantavirus infections.

 

Section 3 Rabies Virus 

1. Describe the biological properties of rabies virus;

2. Describe the epidemiology, explain the pathogenesis and the clinical course of rabies;

3. List the appropriate lab tests for diagnosis, and know how to manage, prevent, and control rabies viral infection.

 

Section 4 Human Papillomavirus

1. Describe the general properties of HPV;

2. Explain the pathogenesis of HPV;

3. List the appropriate laboratory tests for diagnosis, and know how to treat, prevent and control HPV infection.

 

Section 5 Prion

1. Describe the biological properties and pathogenesis of prion;

2. Know how to make a diagnosis, treat, prevent, and control prion diseases;

3. Compare traditional viruses and prions.
