Hello dear students
So after learning all the cultural etiquette
it is time to practice
We are now going to have an in-depth tour in Emirati companies
or business enterprises
It is good to know more about greeting culture
Structure and hierarchy in Emirati companies
appointment and meeting culture
and finally how to maintain a good business relationship
with your Emirati counterpart
First Greeting Culture
Greet first the most senior person present
in Muslim culture
this is a sign of respect
The customary greeting is “peace be upon you”
and the answer is peace be upon you
For men
when entering the avenue
the usual introductions will start
with a handshake and can be quite lengthy
Make sure to use only the right hand
When greeting an Emirati
greet each Emirati separately
greet each Emirati separately
According to Muslim custom
it is preferable that you do not shake hands
or make any other kind of physical greeting
with your female Muslim business partners
there is very little contact
between men and women when greeting in public
After the handshake
you will place your right hand on your heart
or chest as a sign of respect
For women
if someone introduces you to a Muslim man
wait to see if he holds out his hand
If not
don’t initiate a handshake
If you meet up with another woman
wait for her to greet you
many times a kiss on the left cheek is acceptable
Structure and hierarchy in Emirati companies
Most UAE companies have strong vertical grades
Many are owned and operated by a powerful person
who has the right to decide everything
The person must be treated with respect and dignity
especially if you want to build a successful business relationship
In addition
the oldest person in the room is usually the most senior
but you may find that there are others involved
Always try to figure out the title and status of the person
you are meeting in advance to show proper respect
Next
Work Hours
The work week traditionally begins on Sunday and ends on Thursday
Friday and Saturday are officially the weekend
Some of the smaller private companies are only closed on Fridays
Office hours of Western style have been highly appreciated in the UAE
In other words
running all day long with a short break for lunch
Appointment Culture
Appointments should generally be set no more than a fortnight in advance
and reconfirmed again
one or two days
before the actual meeting as priorities may change
Things may change quickly
so it is suggested to be relaxed
and come prepared with a business card
to have them know you were there
Meeting Culture
It is common for business meetings in the UAE
to be disorganized
even chaotic
Don’t be surprised if someone is late
shows up unannounced
checks their phone irregularly
or changes the direction of the discussion
Business Negotiations
When it comes to actual business negotiations
you should always strive to be flexible
Having a clear goal in your mind is required
but be capable to make change is also needed
What’s more
decision making in the UAE is usually a lengthy process
and therefore should not be rushed
In fact
patience is a key characteristic
and relationships are often built over a series of meetings
The Emiratis are known for their expert negotiation skills
Any means of pressure will be seen as negative
In other words
it is advisable to avoid using negative expressions such as the word “no”
if some doubt about the outcome of the negotiations has been raised
Working Relationships
In the UAE
people prefer to talk business in person
Relationships and mutual trust are essential to any successful business interaction
and can only be developed through face-to-face meetings
It is vital to spend time with your business partners in the UAE
and ensure that this relationship continues to be nurtured in future meetings
Okay
after learning all about UAE’s business intercultural communication knowledge above
we hope you may enjoy successful contact with your counterparts
See you later
