Hello everyone
Welcome to the Intercultural Business Tour in Thailand
Now let’s move on to the most important part
of intercultural knowledge about Thai’s psychology
The key cultural concepts of Thailand
In this part we are going to talk about four key terms
Family Indirectness Hospitality and Religious Conventions
First Family of Thais
As the cornerstone(基石) of Thai society
family is given great value and importance
Families in Thailand are close
with several generations likely to live under the same roof
and the oldest male member being the head of the family
The power structure of the family
is reflected in the business organizational environment
Although this is becoming less and less the case as times progress
and modernize the advice of the elders
is expected to be heeded(留意)without question
Second I would like to tell you more about the Indirectness if Thais
Implicity(含蓄) and indirectness(间接)
is an important feature of Thai culture
In communication
a considerable part of the information lies
in the subliminal(潜移默化的)
messages or non-verbal(非口头的)cues(线索)
In order not to lose face
Thais avoid direct confrontation(冲突)and criticism
If given it is best passed on indirectly
So it is best to avoid displaying strong emotions
publicly like raising your voice
angering or insulting others which can result
in your Thai business partners’ thinking
disrespectfully(失礼地) of you
However Thais are generally very easygoing
and laugh easily they have a mai pen rai (泰语 不客气) attitude
Next the Hospitality of Thais
It is the nature of Thais to be warm and hospitable
both in social and professional settings
Thais will show their generosity by welcoming guests
into their homes and offering the best they may have
In terms of service
Thais consider it very serious and provided with modesty
One of the most important protocol
we should pay attention to is Thai religious conventions
We have to bear in mind that most Thais practice Buddhism
As many Buddhist holidays are in April and May
when a number of Thai businesses go on holiday then
so the best months to do business in Thailand
are between November and March
which also avoid the extreme heat
of summer and monsoon(季风) rains
There are also other important religious rules
to follow if you want to conduct business
with your Thai counterparts smoothly and successfully
Firstly you have to mind your foot
If you accidentally point at your Thai business partner
using your foot or heel or any part of your foot
or to show the sole(脚底)
of your foot or use the foot to move anything
you would be considered rather rude
and disrespectful as foot is viewed as the most inferior
and smudgy(脏污的) part of the body by Buddhists
Second you also need to pay attention to your shoes
Be sure to take your shoes off
when entering a Thai business partner’s home
places of worship and some particular hotel rooms
Don’t put your feet up on a table or any furniture
and don’t step over anyone sitting on the floor to go around
Make sure you step over all thresholds
when invited by your Thai business partners to other venues
otherwise this will cause bad fortune according
to their religious beliefs
Thirdly mind your hands
Always use your right hand or both hands
to pass or receive any object
Pointing with the index finger(食指)
is considered extremely rude
Instead using your chin(下巴)
or whole hand or flat palm(平手掌)is the right thing to do
You should also always treat images of Buddha(佛像)
with extreme respect whenever you see or invited
to temples by your Thai business partners
See you next time bye bye
