Hello dear students Welcome back

business culture and etiquette in South Africa

Historically

Chinese navigator Zheng He

during the Ming Dynasty

had led trade envoys

and reportedly reached the eastern

and southern Africa coastal region

four times

carving out an ancient maritime Silk Road trade route

As one of the continent’s

fastest growing economies

South Africa was among

the first African countries to sign cooperation documents

on the Belt and Road Initiative with China

The country has been actively

participating in the Belt and Road construction

to boost regional integration and increase connectivity

Now I would like to show you a video

Now let’s take a look at the Country File of South Africa

South Africa is located

at the southern tip of the continent of Africa

bordering to the east of coastline of Southern Africa

tretching along the Indian Oceans

to the northeast by Mozambique and Swaziland

to the north by the neighboring countries of Namibia

Botswana and Zimbabwe

The coastlines of South Africa

are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean

to the west and the warm Indian Ocean

to the east

South Africa has a temperate and pleasant climate

with warm sunny days for most of the year

The seasons in the Southern Hemisphere

are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere

so South Africa’s summer season

runs from November to February

and is characterized

by a warm to hot climate in most areas

Different from most countries

South Africa has three capitals namely Pretoria

Cape Town and Bloemfontein

Each city

serves as a hub for different branches of government

Pretoria is the administrative capital

while Cape Town is the legislative capital

and Bloemfontein the judicial capital

Due to its dependence on foreign trade

the South African economy

is sensitive to global economic conditions

Precious and base metals have been the main exports

agricultural products and military equipment

also play a vital role

South Africa’s main imports are chemicals

chemical products and motor vehicles

South Africa’s major trading partners are China

the United States Germany and Japan

Regional trade in Southern Africa

is increasingly significant

particularly through the Southern African

Development Community (SADC)

SADC supports increasingly free

trade as part of its agenda

to eradicate poverty in Southern Africa

Within this area

member states removed tariffs

on trade with each other

but remained free

to impose their own external

tariffs on non-member nations

As the industrial hub of Africa

South Africa is rich in natural resources

making it one of the largest

and well-developed economies on the continent

It has great

potential as an investment destination

with a highly developed

economic infrastructure

and is one of the most promising

and dynamic emerging market economies

in the world

South Africa is often referred

to as the “Land of the Rainbow”

as it is one of the most multicultural countries

in the world

A large number of ethnic groups

have made up the whole population

creating a society of diverse races

cultures languages and beliefs

from the black indigenous tribes

of South Africa to the peoples

of Europe India Malaysia and China

In addition

there is no official state religion in South Africa

due to the characteristics of a multinational country

According to a 2013 General Household Survey

the majority of South Africans are Christian

and the rest identified as traditional African religions

Islam and Hindu

It is imperative that

those who wish to do business in South Africa

have a proper understanding of the

complex culture of South Africa

Hence knowing some cultural information

would be great helpful for you

to do business in South Africa

African food is vegetable-centric

and maize is viewed as an important staple

often in the form of porridge

known as “Mealie pap”

The dish made from beaten dried corn kernels

sugar beans butter onions potatoes

peppers and lemons

are regarded as the traditional fare as well

Ok so much for this part
