About the Writer：Du Fu
Du Fu(712---770), courtesy name Zimei, remarkable realistic poet of the Tang dynasty, and was jointly known as “Li Du” with Li Bai. He was born in Gong county, Henan province, and his ancestral place is Xiangyang, Hubei province. In order to distinguish himself from the other two poets, Li Shangyin and Du Mu, namely “ little Li Du”, Du Fu and Li Bai were also called “Big Li Du”, and Du Fu was often called “old Du”.
As an adolescent, Du Fu traveled to Wuyue State and Qizhao State. During this period he went to take the imperial examinations in Luoyang. After the age of 35, he went to take the exam in Chang’an, but failed. Later, he presented ode to the emperor and the nobleman. However, he didn’t succeed in the officialdom, and witnessed the luxury and social crisis of the upper class of the Tang dynasty. In 755, the An Lushan’s Rebellion began, Tongguan fell, and Du Fu traveled to many places. In 759, Du Fu abandoned his official position and went to Sichuan province. Although he escaped from the chaos of war, the life was relatively stable, he still cared about the people and country. Famous works, such as Climbing the Mountain, Spring Scene, North March, Three Officials and Three Others were created by him. Although Du Fu was a realistic poet, he also had a wild side. It is not hard to see Du Fu’s heroic spirit from his famous works Drinking Song of Eight Immortals.
Benevolent governance is the core of Du Fu’s thought, and he has the grand ambition. Although Du Fu was not well known in his lifetime, he became famous later, exerting a profound influence on both Chinese and Japanese literature. About 1500 of Du Fu’s poems have been preserved, most of them collected in Du Gongbu.
In the winter of 770, Du Fu died of illness at the age of 59. He made a significant impact in Chinese classical poetry, and he has been called “Sage Poet” and his poems have been called “Poetry of Epics”. He has been termed Du Shiyi or Du Gongbu, also called Du Shaoling or Du Fu Cottage by the later generation.
