       About the writer:Bing Xin

Bing Xin (October 5, 1900 - February 28, 1999),formerly known as Xie Yuying.Her pen name Bing Xin was taken from “a piece of ice heart in the jade pot”. She is a Christian and a native of Changle District, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province. She is a famous Chinese poet, modern writer, novelist, translator, children's literature writer.She used to be the honorary chairman of China Association for the Promotion of Democracy, the vice-chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Societies, the honorary chairman and counselor of the Chinese Writers Association, the honorary director of the Translators Association of China，etc. Her prose and poetry once had a great influence, which were called “starry style” and “spring water style” by Mao dun respectively. She is the first famous female writer in the history of modern Chinese literature, who is famous for preaching the “philosophy of love”.

Bing xin is a contemporary of this century. She has kept on writing for 75 years with following the changes of the century and keeping up with the pace of the times. She was the elder of the new literary movement.Her writing process shows the great development of Chinese modern and contemporary literature from the May 4th literature revolution to the new era literature. She created a variety of literary styles of “bing xin style”, and carried out a solid practice of literary modernization. She is the first generation of children's literature writers in China, as well as a famous modern Chinese novelist, essayist and poet. Her translations, such as The Prophet, Sand and Foam, Tagore's Gitanjali, The Gardener, and a variety of plays, are recognized as excellent literary translations, for which she was awarded the National Cedar Medal by the President of the Republic of Lebanon in 1995. Her literary influence transcends national boundaries. Her works have been translated into different languages and appreciated by readers all over the world.

Bing Xin is also a famous social activist. Since the founding of China, she has successively served as the second and third council and the secretariat secretary and consultant of the Chinese Writers Association,  the member and vice-chairman of the second to Fourth National Committee of the China Federation of literary and Art Circles, the vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy, the deputy of the first to fifth National People's Congress, standing committee member of the fifth to seventh National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the member of the eighth and ninth National Committee, the vice-president of the National Children's Welfare Foundation, and the member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Women's Federation, etc. She always devote herself to various activities with vast love of the motherland, people and children. She has made outstanding contributions to the development of China's literary cause, women and children's cause, and to upholding and improving the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
