Welcome to the last session of the course Innovation and Creative Thinking. This session will focus on creative thinking in everyday life.

There are many examples of creative thinking in our everyday experience. Creativity has no boundaries. Innovations can be seen in almost every corner of our world irrespective of age, culture and place.

If you go to an international exhibition on inventions, you will certainly find this a common phenomenon.

Let’s take the 2019 International Inventions Exhibition in Geneva as an example. Some inventors were just children from primary and secondary schools.

The following interview will demonstrate how these students developed a data-driven system that helps learning and teaching of languages in schools.

Moderator: How did you come up with the idea?

A: It’s because we see that many people in Hong Kong lack proficiency in different languages especially Putonghua.  If you like to find a way to let them learn the language, and not only they lack proficiency and also lack the interest to understand other people’s cultures and learn other people’s language. Hopefully through our Apps, by gamifying an excursion for language, they could learn more about the language.

B: Also, we realize in Hong Kong, may not need it in many places in the world.toddlers play mobile Apps like scrabble, puzzle games from their folders when commune in their free time.  So we hope that through gamifying education and also combining music that can help people learn quite efficiently and increase language efficiency among people.

B:我们也意识到,在香港,可能在世界上很多地方都不需要它。小孩子在空闲时间坐车时文件夹里的拼字游戏、益智游戏等移动应用程序。所以我们希望通过游戏化的教育并结合音乐,能够帮助人们高效地学习,提高人们的语言效率。

 

Moderator: What challenges did you encounter in the process, and how did you overcome them?

A: One of the major challenges is debugging our Apps. Actually, we are using a prototype that was made two years ago, add on it to create new things, new interest. So at first, I am not very familiar with the original program, so I need to get time to get used to it. When I debug, is a little bit harder than it was if I used to it.

A: We have five languages, so three Mandarin songs, one Japanese song and one Korean song.  Basically, we have 3 levels for each song.  Level one is the easiest level for those who have the lowest skill level. We have a lot of games, for example, the pop-up windows, the pronunciation, and the lyrics and they press the button to listen.

B: The game also has many other plans, for example, the answer is near the top, both show the answer, the store “Duo, the “d”, so there will be “boat”.  Here we also click on this button to listen to the pronunciation again. We also click the “Help” button to re-display the pop-up screen to match the corresponding bubble to the word, so now is “Sh”, “S”.  The third level is harder. You have to firm the initial tone by yourself so there will be like fewer hands for the more advanced user. You can still click on this, listen to the pronunciation.

B: We can talk about the practice screen first. We also develop the practice screen for users to practice speaking the language because we think that learning the language should be two-sided but not only you have to know how to listen to the language of other speakers. This are the lyrics of a song.  This is the English translation, you can press this one to listen to the English pronunciation again.  You can try to imitate it.

The inventions could range from a tiny water-based technology to manufacture, recycle, regenerate and reuse Li-ion batteries, to a folding shower, a water-saving bathroom technology that is watertight and self-cleaning with a built-in climate control.

Basically, how we started? Why we started? This is the basic question.

The reason why we started is that now we recognized that there is global warming, changes in the environment. So, everyone, all in the world are looking for a solution. The temporary solution is we want to eliminate carbon emission.

That’s why you have the electrical vehicle installation all that, collect solar power, collect the energy. The most convenient, the most effective form is to use the battery. Lithium ion battery is one system that is mature and it works. Yes, using lithium ion battery we resolve one problem.

The one problem is to eliminate carbon emission, but at the same time we are creating a difficult problem. Because lithium ion batteries are not very environmental friendly to manufacture. Because, we have to use a lot of organic solvent like NMB, like we use the binding material PVDF and it is not good for the environment. So when you walk into a factory, you smell a very foul smell because of the volatile materials.

Secondly, the bigger problem, as we can see the whole world is crazy about making lithium ion battery. But how about future year, 5 years, 10 years fromnow, all the used up lithium ion battery, how do you deal with it.

Now, currently, there are two major solutions. One you burn it, high heat, not environmentally friendly. The second one, you use strong acid to dissolve it. Again, not environmentally friendly. The recovered material that you get back, is not necessary in its pure form, and is in different form.

You get back something, but it’s not economical enough, attractive enough to recover. Because what you spent on recovery, is far more than what you can recover. This is the problem that we resolve. Can we do something else? There have been talkingfor long time, can we replace organic solvent with water, whatever form. But it is difficult, because the chemical nature, the chemistry of most battery materials.

Researchers are all painful. We’ve gone through a process of learning; learning process, learning process and all that. We restructured and now we successfully restructured the making of lithium ion battery, replacing all the harmful organic solvents with water and water based binding.

People ask water based technology, how good it is. Is it good? We use NMC. They are different. For this type of battery, we use EV. You can see people ask for cycle life, how long can you cycle, how stable is the battery structure. For EV, we can do up to 3000 times plus, over 3000 times.

This is what we call SOC, the state of charge. Unlike other test, we do zero to a hundred, 3000 times not within one range. If it is within the specific range, if you control the range, this battery can run much longer. Even the most stringent test, we are able to achieve 3000 times. Now for the ESS, energy storage system, this is a different information. We can cycle 5000 plus times, so it is longer. Now, actually we have battery can cycle even longer.

A: If you open the door, you can see then the touch screen for water temperature control and water flow control. It’s quite environmentally friendly. It consumes a tinyamount of energy. And also you can save water between scrubbing yourself, you don’t need water. You press the button and water is connected. Once again you can shower.
