Key points 8-1 Genetic codons and ribosome

This week, we are concerned about how the genetic information contained in the nucleotide sequence of the linear arranged mRNA molecules continues to be transmitted and become the various protein molecules. There are thousands of proteins in cells with different functions, but their synthesis process is not different. Each amino acid needs to be connected one by one according to the codon in mRNA to form the polypeptide chain. The process of protein biosynthesis is what we call translation. Just think about it. In this process, mRNAs carry genetic information, ribosomes catalyze transpeptidyl reaction, tRNAs carry amino acid substrate, and aminoacyl tRNA synthetase carry amino acid for tRNA. In this section, let's first understand the structure and function of these important members involved in the translation process.

 

The key points of this section include:

1、   Eukaryotic mRNA contains exons and intron(s)

ü  ORF5’-UTR3’-UTP

2、   Codon

ü  CodonStart codon and stop codon

ü  The third base degeneracysynonyms

3、   The ribosome

ü  The structure and composition of ribosome

ü  The function of ribosome: the big subunit and the small subunit

ü  Three important tRNA binding sites

4、   tRNA

ü  The secondary structure and the three-dimensional (3D) configuration of tRNA

ü  The function of tRNA and the function of each arm in tRNA

ü  The Wobble hypothesis

5、            Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases

ü  The two-stage reaction for charging a tRNA

ü  The proofreading function of Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases
