Hi everyone
welcome to our intercultural business tour
Now
let’s move on to the fun part
The business etiquette
In this part
we are going to talk about the following etiquettes
that you should pay strong attention to while communicating
with Malaysian businesspeople
They are
Punctuality
Language matters
Greetings
Gift giving
Dress code
And Religion protocol.
First
Punctuality
The attitude to punctuality varies depending
on which nationality you do business with in Malaysia
Chinese-Malaysians
for example
demand punctuality
while Malay and Indian-Malaysian businessmen
are more lenient with time
Normally
you will be asked to be on time
so it is recommended that you arrive on time
The second thing you need to pay attention to is
that language matters in Malaysia
If your business in Malaysia requires you to communicate
with Malaysian government officials
please ensure
that all communications are carried out in Malay
However
most transactions and communications with Malaysian companies
are generally conducted in English
Also
Greetings in Malaysia need to be noted too
Generally
when you meet your Malaysian business partners for the first time
a firm handshake is the standard greeting
However
you should only shake hands with a Malaysian businesswoman
if she offers to do so
Otherwise
a nod or a bow is appropriate
Also
you should treat your older Malaysian business partners
with respect and ensure that they are always recognized
in front of the younger members of the organization
Since respecting for the elders
is also an essential part of Malaysian culture
this is an important part of achieving successful business
deals in Malaysia
Therefore
when greeting a group of people
the oldest person should be greeted first
with a slight bow to show your respect
and you should always address your Malaysian business partners
according to their titles
i.e Mr Mrs Doctor
unless they specifically indicate that you call them by name
With a diverse cultural background in Malaysia
it is difficult to properly address your Malaysian business partners
thus it is recommended that you find out in advance
how you should address them
Malaysians’respect for authority is evident in most business interactions
For example
the relationship between subordinates
and superiors is obvious and highly official
Malaysians do not address their superiors by name
but by appellations
such as sir and ma am
followed by honorifics- such as Miss
Mrs
Doctor
Next
let’s talk about the Gift giving in Malaysia
business scenarios
Gifts are not usually exchanged among Malaysian business circles
because they may be considered a bribe
and this bears the same characteristics
of business culture in other East Asian countries
like Thailand and Singapore
It is still acceptable to exchange small gifts
after an initial business meeting
In the case of receiving a gift
it is customary to take the gift with both hands
and wait to open it after the business meeting
You should remember to return the favor
with a gift of equal value
so as not to lose face
Now
let’s talk about the Dress code in Malaysia
Both men and women are expected to wear formal attire
and people lay emphasis on dressing well
A suit and tie for men and a suit or skirt
and blouse for women are considered appropriate
Women should be aware of Muslim sensibilities
and dress conservatively
Wearing anything yellow should be avoided
as yellow is the exclusive colour of Malaysia
Okay
we all know that Malaysian are very religious
So we need to follow the religion protocol too
It is polite to give or receive anything
with two hands
and if you must pass something
with one hand to your Malaysian business partners
use the right hand
According to Islamic principles
the left hand is set aside for cleansing body
and should not be used alone to receive or pass objects
Also
avoid touching or passing objects over the top
of someone’s head
because the head is considered the most sacred part of the body
out of religious beliefs for some Malaysians
What’s more
it’s also considered bad manners to point
with your fingers in Malaysia
If you need to point to someone or something
use your right thumb with four fingers folded beneath your palm
Also
some of your Malaysian business partners
might not be the kind of drinkers
you expected
or they don’t drink alcohol
at all due to Islamic
Hindu and Buddhist teachings
see you next time
Bye bye
