The following video illustrates two land readjustment projects in Guangdong, China, where urban villages are being upgraded despite unclear private property relations.  Like most urban villages in China, formal land rights are in the hands of the collective, and individual members cannot transfer their formal land use rights to non-village members.  Yet after years of urban development, residents who live in these two neighborhoods possess both formal and informal property rights and claims.  There are village and non-village members living in these areas, making the property relations extremely complex.  Instead of clarifying these complicated property relations first, the two collectives, in collaboration with the local government, initiated two land readjustment projects to redevelop their neighborhoods.  The following video captures the essence of these two infill redevelopment projects in southern China, where property relations were not legally delineated prior to the implementation of land readjustment.
