To ask for clarification is an important speaking skill
It gives you a chance to correctly understand
the other party in a conversation
and hence to avoid confusion or misunderstanding
In addition it indicates that you are interested in
what he or she has said
The skill is especially useful in cases where
what is being talked about is somewhat
difficult complex or sensitive
Now check the answers
From the listening material
can you get some ways to ask for clarification
One common way to ask for clarification
is to check with the speaker whether
you have got his / her point
To do so you can rephrase the speaker's words
as how you understand them
For example in the radio phone-in you have just heard
the following expressed are used
These expressions can be said either in a question intonation
or in a declarative one
depending on the degree of certainty
you feel about your understanding of the speaker
When speaking with a rising intonation
you are rather unsure
When using a falling intonation
you are somewhat confident
although not entirely sure
that you have got the point right
To clarify something
we can offer back the messages as
how we understand them
Here are some expressions we can use
Another approach to asking for clarification is to
asking the speaker himself / herself to repeat
rephrase or summarize what has been said
Some useful expressions are the following
Actually it should be noted that these expressions convey
varying degrees of politeness and formality
In actual speech we should choose what best fits the specific situation
in which the conversation takes places
Now let's work in pairs and do a role-play on the following situations
Now let's invite two group of students to give us a model
