Identifying supporting details

Supporting details provide materials that explain

defend or illustrate the speaker's idea

They help us understand or remember

the speaker's idea better

There are three commonly used methods

that we can use to identify supporting details

Then let's look at each method in detail

When we hear the underlined phrases like

When we listen we also need to be sensitive to

these types of cues and make use of them

to recognize supporting details

One thing we should be aware is that

not every detail is introduced by a signal word

or other clues Because of this

we should always pay attention to the sentences

that the speakers say right after they express their opinions

because this is usually where the speakers

give the supporting details

Now we're going to listen to a group of

people talking about surveillance

Use the above methods to

help you recognize the supporting details of their opinion
