First of all, formulate the design scheme.

Create the play based on the themes that students choose,

and design the outlines of roles.

In order to make the shadow play flexible,

there are 11 parts in a complete shadow puppet,

including head, chest, belly,e a pair of legs, arms, elbows and hands.

The head part is the head of the puppet in the shadow play.

In order to distinguish and shape the figures and characters,

shadow puppeteers usually put the head part and the body part separately in the shadow puppet box.

Before the performance,

the appropriate head part will be chosen and inserted on the body part for performance according to the plot.

According to the different positioning of various roles in the plot,

exaggerated deformation is given by adjusting the proportion of each part of the body

to make it suitable for the dramatic performance of the shadow play.

Draft Copying

The treatment of materials before draft copying is also a meticulous step.

Parts of the leather will be made into prominent parts, such as head, chest and belly,

and some will be made into legs or other general props by cutting.

In this manner, the waste on the leather can be reduced and the quality of shadow puppets can be improved.

Also, the upper part of shadow puppets will be light while the lower part will be heavy,

so that shadow puppeteers can perform stably and conveniently.

Next, sample drawing.

A steel needle will be used to draw the outline and design patterns of each part on the leather,

which is called draft copying.

Then, the leather will be placed on a wooden table for carving.

Carve

Carving tools generally are professional shadow puppet carving knives and wood carving knives.

Carving requires exquisite techniques,

and the carving person shall be proficient in different use methods of various tools such as wood carving knives,

chisel wood carving knives.

Carving methods include concave carving and convex carving,

and for the former one,

it is carved by hollowing out the body line which is mostly adopted in the production of shadow puppets.

The outline form is reserved for the physical parts,

and the rest part is carved out.

This is called convex carving,

mostly applied to the white face of male roles.

All white objects are carved by the convex carving.

Drawing lines are drawn by a paintbrush to depict the fine objects.

Coloring

After carving, here comes coloring.

In order to ensure that the color will not fade off easily during the performance,

oil paint and dyeing paint are generally used.

According to the design color drawing,

color on the plate,

and pay attention to the color match and the color shade.

In the end, adjust the color relations according to the light effect before the screen.

Binding

A complete shadow puppet can be formed by the 11 main parts.

To complete the performance,

3 bamboo sticks shall be installed as the joysticks.
