Episode 7: Hainan Shadow Show- Relic of the Southern Song Dynasty

“The loyal puppets are carved with upright appearance while evil puppets are engraved with disfigured appearance.

Their kindness and evilness can be clearly manifested by their faces.”

Menglianglu of the Southern Song Dynasty.

Menglianglu is the note made by Wu Zimu of the Song Dynasty.

It is a copyright introducing the urban style of Linan,

which is the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty.

This section is a poem of describing the shadow show modeling of the Song Dynasty.

We learned in the previous lessons that shadow show began in the Northern Song Dynasty in the real sense.

On the one hand,

due to the changes in Jingkang,

Jin soldiers abducted a large number of entertainers,

and the shadow show spread to the north accordingly.

On the other hand,

after the capital relocation of the Southern Song Dynasty,

the shadow show developed from deity amusement to people entertainment,

and the paper carving of the northern Song was changed into the sheepskin painting.

In the meanwhile,

a special shadow show organization- “Huigeshe” appeared in the society.

Today, we are introducing the shadow show of the Southern Song Dynasty-Haining Shadow Puppetry.

It happened in Lin’an,

the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty.

Haining shadow show mainly refers to the shadow show of Hangzhou and Haining areas.

The modelings of Haining shadow show mainly adopt the realistic techniques,

most of which reserve the “skin painting” styles of the Song shadow show.

In the Southern Song period,

the shadow show spread in from Bianjin(Kaifeng) and then rooted in Lin’an,

Haining, Jiaxing and Tongxiang areas.

It is integrated and developed with the local folk art and custom.

It has already had a history of over 800 years up to now.

Modeling characteristics:

The most distinctive feature of Haining shadow puppets is that they pioneered theatrical facial makeup modeling,

and it uses the principle of typology to shape the loyalty,

traitorous beauty and ugliness of the characters.

“Less carving,

more painting,

flat painting of single lines”,

round and active face,

side face of single eye,

less exaggeration,

more realistic and rich “human feelings”

The overall character presents one hand and closed feet(side body).

One character has at least two sticks,

and the characters with complicated movements have even six or seven sticks.

The sheepskin is scraped to the degree of crystal transparency and then painted with various colors,

which is endurable and beautiful.

The character modeling skills adopt single-line flat painting and heaving colored painting.

Haining is rich in silk.

Haining has a custom of praying to the god of silkworms,

and therefore the shadow show is also called “the silkworm flower opera” or “the silkworm flower group”.

After being spread in from the Southern Song Dynasty,

it was immediately integrated with the local

“Haiyan tune” and “Haining minor”,

and it absorbed the classical tune of “Yiyang tune”,

changing from the northern music into the southern tune,

and eventually forming the classical music with “Yiyang tune” and “Haiyan tune” as the two major accents.

It has become one of the few dramas that still preserves the rhyme of the Southern Song Dynasty among the many dramas.

It preserves in its original taste the outstanding southern music that many experts and scholars are looking for.

Shadow show The Flooding of Jinshan Temple

General story:

According to ancient Chinese folklore,

the White Snake Lady and Xu Xian married after falling in love at first sight.

Monk Fahai saw Xu Xian with a devilish face,

so he hid Xu Xian in Jinshan Temple.

Lady White Snake led green snake to seek for her husband,

but Fahai refused to return Xu Xian to her.

The White Snake Lady was helpless,

so she had no choice but to fight Fahai.

She used the magic powers to flood Jinshan Temple with the green snake.

The White Snake Lady asked the Dragon Kings,

as well as shrimp solders and crab generals to do a favor.

Fahai moved divine troops to fight against the White Snake Lady

and they finally pressed the White Snake Lady under Leifeng Pagoda.
