8.1.Character design 10: Funny Chou characters课程教案、知识点、字幕

The role of clown is the most preferable when the students create shadow plays.

That is because this role is excellent in creating comic effect,

and there is no need to use modeled head and body proportions.

Design based on the overall effect that the role is to convey is a key point when we are creating this role.

And the facial features should present the distinctive personality of the role.

Thus, the clown can impress the audience and create good dramatic effect one it appears.

This is what we aim to achieve when we are creating this role.

He must have distinctive personality and characteristics.

So, he can be recognized among other roles at the first sight.

The above are the key points we should pay attention in design.

Just now we saw some figures of clown. Next, I'll show you a picture.

As we can see the image of the clown in this picture is dramatically exaggerated.

And this face is 70-percent shape.

Face and nose of this figure is particularly emphasized.

And you can see that it is a typical role of clown.

His nose, mouth and eyes are key parts for emphasis to present his distinct character.

So, the primary requirement for designing a clown is that we should not stick to a certain pattern.

Instead, we should adopt various patterns and modern decorations to stylize

this role to form a unique style of the play and enable the audiences to discover something new during the show.

The comic effect can be even better if we combine personalized language expressions and opera drumbeats.

Peddler is a traditional shadow play in Shannxi Province.

The role of clown - the peddler,is given with distinct local characteristics.

Especially the vivid act that he picks up his tobacco pipe and smokes,

with smoke coming out of his mouth,

makes this play a classic among the all other traditional ones.

Just now, we appreciate the effect of some clowns.

Next, I'd like to show you a newly-created one.

Named as Qin Xianglian, this play is redesigned from another play - The Case of Chen Shimei.

It is well known that, in the play Qin Xianglian,

the character Bao Zheng is a main character.

But the students changed this character into a clown.

It is a very interesting setting.

So let's take a look at the male role in the play,

a handsome male - Zhan Zhao. This is a figure of Zhan Zhao.

Right here. You can see,

the face of Zhan Zhao is designed in the role of a clown.

That is to say, we should design the figures based on the specific plots.

Meanwhile, the image of a role may change dramatically as the plot progresses,

such as the change of a standard male role into a cheeky and funny clown.

That is to say,

we should give full play to our imagination in design and switch the roles based on different contexts.

And this is what I expect you to pay special attention in the design of a clown.

Just now, we talk about the change of a role.

We need to specially modify the design of the head part if we plant to change a role.

The key point is to highlight the eyes and mouth of the role,

and make use of the incised patterns to reshape the image of Zhan Zhao in the play.

We will specifically learn this in the play later.

And how to create a figure of clown with the combination of different sounds,

images music and dialogues.
