Episode 6: Central Plains Shadow Show
The shadow play area in the Central Plains borders Xiaogan and Huangpi in Hubei Province to the south,
faces Zhumadian in the north across the river,
adjoins Lu’an and Fuyang in Anhui to the east,
and Xinyang city to the west.
This area is a typical gathering place of Jianghuai culture with outstanding cultural characteristics.
Henan Luoshan Shadow Show
In the Central Plains, the most representative folk art in Henan is Zhuxian Town New Year Wood-block Print.
Henan Luoshan Shadow Show is gradually transformed from the ancient Central Plains Shadow Show.
It has already had a history of over four hundred and fifty years up to now.
In modeling, it refers to the local characteristics of New Year Wood-block Print,
presenting rich and bold colors,
as well as plain and rough character shapes.
Luoshan shadow puppets mostly adopt 3/4 side head shapes.
Characteristics of the singing tune:
The accompanying instruments are mainly Huqin, Suona and drum.
The most characteristic is the singing tune.
It is not limited to one local opera music,
but is also accompanied with Yunan mountain song,
folk song, and light song formats.
Therefore, the choice of the singing tune is rather extensive,
which also makes it become closer to the public.
Two or three persons are required for front-stage singing
and four persons are required for backstage drum players:
1 person plays the cymbal,
small cymbal and big gong,
1 person plays the slapstick,
drum and bass drum,
one person plays suona,
and the left one plays small gong.

Cheng’an shadow show(Handan)
Cheng’an shadow show is the only ancient cultural heritage in southern Hebei that still maintains its original flavor.
Modeling characteristics:
hoary and old modeling style,
plain and vigorous interest and charm.
The puppets have the height of about 50cm.
The male and female puppets are taller,
but clowns and sprites are smaller.
Tune characteristics:
The main singing tune of Cheng’an is the “Huai tune”.
“Huai tune” is a rare local drama circulated in Huaining County,
Zhoukou District, Henan Province.
It belongs to the local Chinese wooden clapper system.
His singing tune is high-pitched, rugged, simple, and vigorous,
with strong local colors and strong rustic flavor.
In particular, the wooden clapper is rather characteristic.
It has a length of 60cm.
It is thick in the middle,
with a diameter of about 10cm,
and thinner two ends.
The central section has a rectangular opening,
with carved central areas,
thus playing vigorous and powerful tune.
