1.Specifications of Dihuang products

The root tuber of Dihuang is used as medicine with the four categories: fresh, dry, unprocessed, and prepared.

Fresh product just harvested are called "Xian Dihuang". Those dried in the sun or baked with heat after harvest are called "Gan Dihuang" or "Shengdi". Those steamed and processed are called "Shudi".

 

2. Properties and major functions of "Xiandihuang"

The shape of fresh Dihuang is a bit like the sweet potatoes we eat today.

It is spindle shaped or strip-shaped with thin skin, light reddish-yellow color, curved wrinkles on the surface and light yellowish-white cross section.

Fresh Dihuang was widely used in ancient China,but mostly we took its juice.

 

3.Properties and major functions of "Shengdihuang"

After processing fresh Dihuang into Shengdi,the yellow color on the surface is no longer obvious, becoming gray black or gray brown and its cross section becomes gray black or dark black. Compared with fresh Dihuang, Shengdi's effect of heat clearing is weakened, but the effect of yin-nourishing and blood-cooling are enhanced.

 

4.Properties and major functions of "Shudi"

After being steamed and dried in the sun for nine times which is called "nine burnt Shudi",the fresh Dihuang is turned into Shudi. Its appearance turns from yellow to black and the taste turns from bitter to sweet,thus the blood cooling medicine turns into a blood tonic medicine.

 

5.Properties and major functions of "Dihuang charcoal"

"Dihuang charcoal" is made by baking fresh Dihuang without smoke and has the effect of hemostasis. Therefore, the hemostasis effect of Dihuang charcoal is stronger than that of unprocessed Dihuang.
