1.Artificial cultivation and origin varieties
Before Song Dynasty, all the Wutou came from wild resources. Developed to Song Dynasty, artificial cultivation began to take its role to play, thus finally leading to a differentiation of Chuanwu and Caowu.
During the cultivation,because of sufficient fertilizer and suitable conditions, Wutou's medical part started to enlarge with its efficacy gradually mitigated, toxicity neutralized,and tonifying property promoted.On the contrary,the wild ones still saved its strong wild nature or fierce efficacy.
Another important reason finally split Wutou to 2 items is their origin varieties. Chuanwu’s origin is the mother root of Wutou and its planting area is confined to Sichuan Prov.
However, a commercial investigation reveals that many kinds of aconitum plants can be used as herb of Caowu.
2.Character identification
Chuanwu has a irregular cone shape with slight bending, together with step scars on the top.
It inflates to one side at the middle part and its surface is usually brown or taupe with tuberculate lateral roots and marks of daughter roots falling off.
There is taupe polygonal cambium rings on the section with holes in the middle.
While Caowu has a relatively thinner appearance compared to Chuanwu, which is curving and lanky with the shape more like crow's head.
It possesses a darker surface colour than Chuanwu which is taupe or even dark brown, as well as more shrinking skin.
3.Toxicity of Chuanwu and Caowu
Aconitine, contained in Caowu and Chuanwu, a diester diterpenoid alkaloid causes intoxication within 0.2mg, while the lethal dose is 3-5mg.
Caowu induces intoxication or death within half to 1 hour or even within 10 minutes.
Only through process to attenuate, can this herb be internally used. It is applied to syndromes such as wind cold dampness, limb pain,traumatic injuries when internally used.
