2. Characteristics of Heibaishao

3. Characteristics of Baishaoyao

4.Characteristics of Chishaoyao

1.The origin of Baishaoyao and Baishaoyao

Baishaoyao is derived from the dried roots of Shaoyao in family Ranunculaceae.

Its top, bottom and thin roots need to be removed after cleaning. The clean root is dried in the sun after it is peeled and slightly boiled in boiling water or vice versa.

The source of Chishaoyao is from the dried roots of Shaoyao or Chuanchishao, belonging to family Ranunculaceae.

Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China distinguishes Chishaoyao from Baishaoyao by different sources and processing methods.

2. Characteristics of Heibaishao

If the roots of cultivated Shaoyao are neither boiled nor peeled but directly dried, are they classified as Baishaoyao or Chishaoyao?

This kind of processed herb is the highly controversial "Heibaishao"(black and white Shaoyao) in the market.

Studies have proved that  the roots of cultivated Shaoyao without stewing or peeling

have enough paeoniflorin that can meet the requirements of pharmacopoeia on Chishaoyao, so it can be used as Chishaoyao.

3. Characteristics of Baishaoyao

Baishaoyao is cylindrical, straight or slightly curved, with both ends cut flat.

The surface is white or light brownish red, smooth or with longitudinal wrinkles and fine root marks occasionally we could see the residual brown skin.

It is hard in texture and not easily broken. The section will be flat when cut in the color of white or light brownish red.

4.Characteristics of Chishaoyao

Chishaoyao is cylindrical and also slightly curved. The surface is dark brown or purplish brown and is rather rough with transverse raised holes and longitudinal groove. The external skin is easy to fall off, or the cortex is easily seperated with the xylem. It’s hard and brittle in texture, easily broken, and the section is pinky white or pink, while its cortex is thin. The xylem has obvious radial texture and with cracks sometimes. The phenomenon of Chishaoyao's easy-to-fall-off external skin and section with cracks is called zaopifenzha (rough and brittle) phenomenon.
