1.Reasons for the toxicity of Heshouwu
The genuine source of Heshouwu: Heshouwu has only one genuine source, which is the dry root of polygonum plants. But there are too many similar plants in Chinese medicine. Once mistakenly mixed any of the similar herb into Heshouwu,unexpected consequences will occur.
Accurate processing:the ancient books recorded that Heshouwu needs to be steamed and dried 9 times. However, such an exhausting processing method has been abandoned by modern people.

The red Heshouwu and white Heshouwu: the prescription use of half white Heshouwu and Red Heshouwu has been used in the famous ancient prescriptions. The 1985 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia also deleted white Heshouwu from the list of TCM. But by coincidence that clinical toxicity problems of using Heshouwu in a single or dual prescription gradually arose.
The dose and time of using Heshouwu: exceeding required dosage, time and dose of using Heshouwu, have become serious problems that causing Heshouwu’s hepatotoxicity.
2.Character identification
Heshouwu is lumpy or irregular fusiform. The surface is reddish-brown or reddish-brown,
wrinkled and uneven, with shallow furrows, long transverse lenticular projections and fine roots.
It's heavy, solid, and not easy to be broken. The section is light yellowish brown or light reddish brown, powdery. The skin has 4 ~ 11 kind of round shaped vascular bundles, annular arrangement,
forming a "cloud brocade pattern";the central xylem is larger, some with duramen.
