Hello dear students
Now let’s move on to the next part
the intercultural business etiquette
In this part
we are going to talk about the etiquettes
that you should pay much more attention to
while communicating with business partners
They are Dining manners
Business dress code
Language & Communication
First meet-up
Business cards
Personal titles
Punctuality
and Gift giving
So the first
Dining manners
As we have mentioned in the chapter of Saudi Arabia
alcohol and pork are prohibited in accordance with Islam
Since both the UAE and Saudi Arabia are Islamic countries
so alcohol and pork are not allowed in local restaurants
in the UAE either
If alcohol is not served at a business banquet
it is best not to ask for it
During meals
it is considered as improper behavior
if you refuse food or extra help
After eating
place cutlery side up in the middle of your plate
Please bear in mind that
even the left-handed should
eat with your right hand only
as the left hand is considered unclean in terms of Islam
If you are invited to
a Muslim business partner’s house for dinner
be sure to take your shoes off before entering
and set them aside in an orderly manner in the appropriate place
Next
Business dress code
In the Middle East
humility is important for both men
and women in business occasions
Be careful not to wear exposed clothing
such as barefoot sandals
and have your shoulders
arms
and legs covered
In addition
people consider dark clothes to be more professional and conservative
Both men and women should wear business suits
that are well-fitting and stylish
Women can wear suits or dresses with a hem below the knee
Non-Muslim women are not required to wear the hijab or headscarf
unless you plan to visit a religious site during your travel
Next
Language & Communication
Arabic is the most widely spoken language in the UAE
and can be found in all legal documents
and is adopted by most public sector institutions
Basically
it is helpful to understand some of the basic Arabic expressions
used in conversations
What’s more
religious beliefs are often mentioned in dialogues
such as the classic God willing
In the UAE
English is widely used in business transactions
First meet-up
The first meeting is
all about relationship-building and developing trust
Therefore
it’s vital to get to know the individual with
whom you’re doing business
In a conversation
it is customary to ask about the health
and well-being of your business partner’s family
being careful not to ask questions about a wife
or daughter directly
Appropriate questions include
How many children do you have and
Where do they study
As a way to become acquainted with your potential business partners
the first meeting is generally longer and
discussions are usually held leisurely over tea and coffee
Time should be allocated for such business meetings
as they are an important part of Emirati business culture
Business card
On initial contact in the UAE
both parties exchange business cards with the right hand
As we have mentioned in the chapter of Saudi Arabia
it is also preferable to have one side of your business card printedin Arabic
and the other side printed in English
This shows respect and helps to make a great first impression
Personal titles
Status serves as a significant role in the UAE
and must be acknowledged by using the correct title
when addressing someone
According to the custom
it would be appropriate to use terms such as
Mr or Mrs etc
It is same with Saudis
Arabs also address each other
by their first names
Punctuality
Emiratis have the same attitudes toward time as the Saudis
In the UAE
relationships are prior to schedules and punctuality
It is not unexpected that your Emirati counterparts are late
but you should arrive on time
The last is Gift giving
In the UAE
it would be proper to give a small token or gift
to your business partner upon introduction
during the first business meeting
Suitable gifts mainly contain a book or a company memento
Bear in mind that something personal can be a very meaningful touch
therefore a gift related to your partners’ interests would be a better choice
For example
traditional or designer perfumes and colognes
However
since the UAE are conservative and Islamic
protocols that related to Islam must be observed
Do not give alcohol
pork
flowers
and gifts with any imagery of dogs
Additionally
a man should avoid giving a gift to a woman
Ok so much for this part
See you later
