Hello dear students welcome back
To communicate successfully
with people from another culture
the most important thing is to
know what they are thinking
Now let’s move on to the second part
the cultural key concepts of South Africa
In this part
we are going to talk about three key terms
Family Time and Communication styles
First Family
In many cultures
family works as the core unit of the society
In South Africa
the nuclear family
along with the extended family or tribe
is vital to the survival of individuals
and has significant influences on their
values and behavior
The family or tribe is also
an emotionally
Second Time
financially supportive community
financially supportive community
The importance of these units
varies depending on the background
of the South African
Second Time
In both white and
black cultures living in South Africa
the concept of time and
attitudes toward it vary
For most white South Africans
people have a more formal view of time
However on the flip side
you can expect black South Africans
to do things a little slower
Communication styles
In general
South Africa’s communication
style varies greatly depending
on the cultural origins of the individual
For most English-speaking South Africans
pride in their heritage often
leads to a more conservative way
of communicating that
aims to avoid conflict
In contrast
people from Afrikaans backgrounds
are often described
as being more direct
and clearer in their communication
with the goal of being
straightforward and honest
This means that
they tend not to
hesitate to say “no” to others in public
When doing business in South Africa
it is vital to be
aware of differences in communication
styles so that future
business deals can be successfully negotiated
Moreover
establishing personal relationships
and building mutual trust
are two vital factors in South African
business communication culture
In-person meetings are preferred
rather than phone
During the communication process
it is usually a small talk
followed by business negotiations
At this stage
make a judgment call
before engaging in any further
business negotiations
To ensure long-term
business success in South Africa
building relationships
and networks is top priority
Since most South Africans
involved in international business
speak English
there is no need
to worry about the language
of doing business
even if
some have a heavy accent
Ok so much for this part
See you later
